I'm sure this has been asked before, but here it goes. I'm looking
for a color laser printer that is networkable and "reasonably" priced.
I have two uses for this printer. One is I need something that will
print out sharp text, the other is something that can print out
elaborate greeting cards with the correct colors that match closely
what I see on screen. My HP DJ1600CM doesn't do a good job of that.
And since I'll be printing cards, I'll need a laser printer that can
handle thicker like 90 weight paper. Thanks.

The Minolta Magicolor 2200 is one you might want to check out. It is perfect
for all the needs you you are looking for. I think the manufactures rebate
is still on, $300.00 US.

GeezzzZZZZzzzzz Minolta, you must be joking. Minolta is like Brother - JUNK
with a large capital 'J'.

Epson or Kyocera take a lot of beating for quality of print and cost of
running.

Hmmm. Epson and Minolta are the same printers IMO.

http://www.epson.de/eng/product/printer/acul2000/
http://www.minolta-qms.com/products/color/mc2200/index.html

And Kyocera old model 5900c is actually Xerox Phaser 750. The Xerox next
model P.790 is coming from 780 but Phasers 1235 (A4) and 2135 (A3) are
based on OKI LED engine?!?

Of course the real question is if you are going from a HP Deskjet
1600CM to a Minolta Magicolor 2200 desklaser for $1000, I'm guessing
we are talking about mucho superior results no?

Are you sure about Minolta? They took over QMS, whose colour laser
printers had a good reputation among the people I know. I never used
them myself, though.

Early Epson laser printers were not much good in my opinion. I don't
know the current situation; in fact, I didn't know that Epson and
Kyocera made colour laser printers.

Best wishes,

I just went through a cost comparison and concluded that the Ricoh AP306
(also sold as the Savin 624d and the Gestetner 7006w) was the most
cost-effective for printing 36,000 to 72,000 four-color pages over the
printer's lifetime. The HP 8550 was a close second, and gets cheaper for
lifetime uses above 100,000 color pages. The Tektronix (Xerox) and
Minolta/QMS printers have very high consumable costs that make them much
more expensive (but some of the Tektronix printers have much faster print
speeds and better print quality, if that's what you need).

Since you mention greeting cards, make sure you actually test each printer
with the actual cards you plan to use. Some printers claim to allow paper
up to 90lb or 110lb but in practice you may find these are not reliable,
so test test test -- and anticipate a higher rate of paper jams and faster
replacement cycles for some consumables that touch the paper.

Also, try to anticipate if you'll need a paper width larger than 8.5
inches -- if so, you will probably need to jump to an 11x17 printer (the
HP 8550 and Ricoh AP306 meet this need, and I love my 11x17 color
images!).

When projecting your actual lifetime cost, be sure to include replacement
of toner, fuser, drum, OPC unit, rollers, charger units, etc. -- some
manufacturers (especially Minolta) will "forget" to mention some expensive
consumables that must be frequently replaced. The Ricoh printer got the
edge because the company charges much less for color toner when computed
on a per-page basis.

Let me know if you'd like a copy of the spreadsheet I used while computing
relative costs.

Watch out for these costs! The Minolta printer is $1299 minus $300 rebate,
but the TOTAL cost to print 36,000 pages (assume 1,000 pages per month for 3
years) is over $10,000.

By comparison, you'd spend only about $6,000 to print the same number of
pages on the Ricoh AP306 (base cost $3,400 plus consumables).

Don't be penny wise and pound foolish. If you plan to print very few pages
per month, you should seriously consider the high-end inkjet printers.

DO THE MATH.

I don't like Ricoh the company, but I do like my Gestetner 7006w color laser
printer (made by Ricoh).

We went with the HP 8550dn since we the paper feed mechanisms have
worked so well in the 5si and 8000 series printers that we use.
However, the users HATE the slow output. (Yes, calibration has been
turned OFF.) The IS group did not anticipate how spoiled users have
become with the relative high-speed b/w lasers.

Our next color laser will likely be the 21-ipm Xerox Phaser 2135 with
network support, duplexing, and the optional paper trays.
