Hi-
I have been stumbling around this for a day or so now. Can anyone tell
me how to create a 2nd USB Virtual Port for printers. The one I have now is
USB001 and I'm using Win2k.
TIA

Well you really want to know :)) I want to be able to have 2 sets of
different drivers for the same USB printer for testing purposes. If I just
have one port like I do now, both sets of drivers reside on the same port
and printing is very very very slow. with both sets.

The reason I asked is that I host/moderate on two different USB newsgroups
(HTML) and own two HP printers connected via USB.

What you're asking is tough. These ports are created by the HP setup
program. I have no idea how HP goes about it. I do have 3 different drivers
(PCL6, PCL5e and PS) for an HP LJ1200 printing to the HP "DOT4" USB port
with no problems. The 882C doesn't have alternate drivers for the printer on
"USB/DeskJet 880C/MY8BB1926MGE" (how's that for nonsense?). The Entrega hub
I have installed "USB001 (Virtual printer port for USB)", but I cannot use
it at all...only the HP-created ports.

Do you have specific ports for this printer that were created by the setup
program?

Actual printer is Xerox M760..Upon installing it, and the first time that
W2k saw the printer, the "Add New Hardware Wizard" was pointed to the driver
files and then the "USB Printing Support" was installed and consequently
USB001 port was installed. The main Xerox printer driver installation is
subsequently invoked that attaches the M760 to USB001.
Utilizing the "Add Printer Wizard" and the test drivers with "Have
Disk", the Test Drivers attach themselves also to USB001. Hence the problem.
I can do the reverse and attach the test drivers to the USB001 by
themselves and all is ok until the Xerox drivers are also attached and
slowness prevails.
So it would seem to me that W2k see something in the driver files folder
that instructs Add New Hardware Wizard to install "USB Printing Support" and
as part of that USB001.
The initial USB Printing Support was installed by Xerox and I can't seem
to remove it from the registry although I can remove the USB001 and the USB
Printing Support however when installing either the Test or Xerox drivers
again, the "USB Printing Support" comes back as well as USB001 and if you
look real careful, it is Xerox Generated.
Now the bottom line and why I asked how to generate a second, USB002 as
an example, I had the opportunity to chat with Xerox support and it was
mentioned that if one was having problems, to ensure the USB number was
USB001 and not USB002. Therefore one can only assume that it is possible.

Possible yes. From what Xerox says, it's definitely not recommended. :-\

I see your problem. What you need is for the Xerox setup to generate a
working second port. I know that I can't do that! What do I know? ;)

Good luck, Randall.

I know that I can't do it either so that make two of us, now if somebody
else admitted to not being able to do it then we would make the three wise
monkeys.:-)
