Would help to know what type of paper you want (surface/weight) and what
model of printer you have.

Having said that the gloss paper occassionally sold by Aldi or Lidl
takes some beating, and any of the own brand paper sold by Partner (now
branded Ryman) will satisfy most needs.

I have a Canon Pixma i4500. I would have thought that a photo paper
supplier would have a range to choose from. I actually want all sorts, but
at the moment, just 4x6" and 8x10". Not sure if the classic 8x10" size is
so popular these days, but A4 is not only a bit too large, it's also far too
common to the eye. I am looking for glossy generally, but also want some
satin or matt 4x6" sheets. Differeny weights too - around 250gsm for the
large sheets and as low as 120gsm for the smaller sheets, in both gloss and
satin or matt.

I was looking for an internet supplier rather than highstreet, but if there
are good highstreet options I'll look into them.

I have the Pixma ip4200. I had some Kodak Ultima (Kodak's top quality)
which was fine with my previous printer but produced banding with the
ip4200. I now use Epson Premium Pro which gives excellent results with
the Canon.

I don't know about the OP, but I certainly won't drive 40 miles just to get
to a Costco, and then pay a membership fee.

I would drive 40 miles to COSTCO and pay the membership fee. Thery
have real nice glossy paper that costs about 12 cents a sheet. 8" X
11", 150 sheets to the box. I buy 10 or more boxes at a time. More
than makes up for the 40 miles and the membership fee.

The only thing you have to watch is the absorbency of the paper and
consequent drying time. Epson works exceedingly well I will admit, but
it can take an hour to dry properly and always feels sticky. Canon paper
on the other hand dries fully in about ten minutes and feels smooth when
finished.

If not using Canon paper for 6x4 prints Fuji is pretty cheap and works
well as (again) does the Rex brand sold by Aldi/Lidl (can't remember
which.)

You will have great difficulty finding 10x8 photo paper - better buy a
good roller cutter and print at 10x8 on A4 and slice it down.

The Partner/Ryman (and as was Stationery Box) is about £3.99 for 25
sheets and they often do BOGOF. It is available in gloss, satin, lustre,
and matt and is generally around 200-220gm weight (as are most papers.)

If you can find any, paper by Felix Schoeller is some of the best I have
ever found, but I bought that in (I think) Germany. I have a box of
230gm inkjet paper (card?) - not photo - in front of me and it is just
soooooo smooooooth.

I am in the USA, but I really like Ilford paper, which I believe is made
in the UK. I get mine online from Wal Mart. Smooth Pearl (personal
favorite) 8-1/2 x 11 (don't know the UK equivalent, A4??) 100 sheets
for less than $30 US. Here is a link to Amazon UK

I use Ilford papers as well, but now find Walmart or Sam's Club no longer
carry these brands in the store or online. Do you know of any other
retailer carrying this brand at a reasonable price? BTW, Ilford is
headquartered in Switzerland.

As I stated, you can get it from Amazon (Boskey are you in the US or
UK??) Actually Amazon is many dealers. B&H photo carries it as many
others. Just Google Ilford. Not nearly as economical as Sam's Club.. I
don't know what you mean that Sam's Club no longer carries it, here is
the page below,

While Canon touts their own paper they do say there are many other
brands that work well with their ink. They did mention Epson paper.
But they did say that Kodak paper is one brand that for some reason does
not produce good results.

I have used paper from Costco believed to be Ilford, Office Depot and
SureThing with good results.

Ilford is made in Switzerland. Costco used to sell full sheet made in
Switzerland thought to be Ilford. They also sold cut sheet 4x6 made in
the USA. That was thought to be from a different mfg. I do not know
what they sell today and I bought a bunch and do not use glossy as my
only medium. I prefer matte (Epson) and Ilford Classic Pearl. Classic
Pearl is better for dye printers than Smooth as far as fade resistance
but takes much longer to dry.

It started in Ilford, UK, and after moving around a bit, it's English again,
and the Swiss part is Japanese! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ilford_Photo

http://www.ilfordphoto.com/home.asp From this link, "The ILFORD range of
colour photographic products, including 'ILFORD Galerie' inkjet media, is
not manufactured or marketed by HARMAN technology, and remains a separate
business operated by ILFORD Imaging based in Switzerland." It appears this
company produces B&W photography supplies including the Ilford MGIV-RC line
of papers.

Among other things, ILFORD Imaging Switzerland GmbH produces the color line
of papers, including the Galerie Smooth Pearl you mentioned as your
preference. The headquarters remains in Switzerland, but the company is
now wholly owned by the Oji Paper Company as you mentioned. It seems these
two separate companies both trade on the Ilford name, though they don't
appear to have the same target markets. This seems to add to the confusion.

;-)

In 2003 (Just before it went into receivership in the UK) I bought a
stock of A3 & A4 Ilford Premium Glossy paper for use with my Canon
9000S.

The paper worked fine with an old HP printer, but puddled badly with the
Canon. I don't know if the current Ilford papers do this, we don't see
much of them in the UK.

I've stuck to Canon Photo Paper Pro (PR101) ever since. (Except for A3+
and roll formats for panoramas where I use Epson Glossy.)

I guess it depends on what you mean when you say "high quality". If
you mean *really* high quality, Hahnemuehle:

The have suppliers in the UK.

There are just so many permutations with inks/papers and make of printer
that only by testing yourself IME works.

Obviously the best starting point in own manufacturers and inks. However if
you are with a photo group see if you can swap a sheet to try for a test.

One surprise recently was 50 sheets A4 glossy from Asda. A lightweight paper
180gsm that was £5.97 but with an HP printer using Vivera HP inks it
produced amazing tonal range in the shadow to midtones. It does however
require careful handling and long drying times as the surface scratches very
easily.

I also bought Fuji Multijet 270gsm gloss and was blocking in the shadows and
very neutral tones. I had bought by necessity as that was all they had when
I needed paper Kodak Ultima. The light fastness of this paper is
extraordinary. Colours are quite bright and punch though.
