Printing CD/DVD on Canon

I was at the local Fry's to look at the CD printing Epsons. I am a former
Epson owner and a happy current Canon owner. As it happened the Fry's
salesman was accompanied by the Canon sales rep. While Canon does not sell
printers capable of printing CD/DVDs, the rep told me that their version of
the I960 sold in the UK does have an optional CD/DVD accessory. The rep told
me it would be about $80US incl. shipping.
However I haven't been able to find it on the Web. Has anyone seen this
thing?

Try looking for i865 or i965. The models with the CD-printing tray ends
with a 5.
Also, I think it's illegal for Canon to sell the CD-printing tray version
is North America, so I'm surprised Fry's would be willing to import it for
you. I guess if they do, you'll lose out on a local warranty.

There is some kind of complicated "copyright infringement" problem involved with selling the
cdr printer in the states.
The phone call I made to Canon got me the answer I didn't want to hear. They are NOT
persuing the problem, and for now have no plans to offer it in the US.
I could not get a definitive answer about whether the "copyright" problem was a PRINTER issue
or an MPAA issue. (they have a finger in EVERY pie that has to do with CD & DVD
burning/labeling).

AFAIK, it is a patent problem, or else other printer manufacturers
wouldn't be allowed to sell CD printers.

Yeah thats what I thought "Patent problem" but the people on the phones at Canon Support kept

I purchased a Canon i860 last week and was pretty disappointed to find that
the CD tray wasn't included. In the future, if I had 2 similiar printers,
the CD tray would be the deciding factor.
Thankfully for Canon, their current crop of printers are so much cheaper to
run than comparable epsons that I'm willing to over look the lack of the
tray.

Some caveman must be pretty POed that we never paid him for his invention

to find someone with that answer with no reply by anyone in the "know". I
even considered buying one off of ebay.uk but decided against it because I
did not know what the power requirements for the unit might be. I also
checked into the cost of cd/dvds that can be printed on and that made my
final decision to go with a non-disk printing canon. I did not want to go
the epson route as I have been there three times and have been disappointed
with their inkjets each time. Yeah it takes me a long time to learn.
