I purchased the HP PSC 750 about a week ago and have been very pleased
with it except for one small problem. Almost every day it would tell
me that the Director couldn't talk to the printer. I would then
reinstall the sotware and apply the USB patch from HP's web site and
again I would have the problem. I looked at all the articles on HP's
web site and other places and all indications were that there was a
problem with the USB connection, I even went and got a gold pin USB 2
cable to see if that would help, it didn't. Yesterday I was doing some
scanning and everything was fine until I decided that I need some
music to listen to while I was scanning. I removed the HP install CD
and replaced it with the music CD and all of a sudden I was getting
the messge again about reinstalling the software. I thought here we go
again. Pulled the USB cable from the printer like HP suggest to cure
the problem and I got a W2K message that it couldn't a certain program
on drive E:, which is my CDROM drive. This got me to thinking about
what I had just done so I put the HP sotware CD back into the drive
and the Director would then work and I could scan again, took the CD
out and I would get the error message. I gave up on the music and left
the HP software CD in the drive and haven't had any problems since. I
worte HP about this problem but haven't heard back from them
yet, doesn't make since to me that I have to leave the install CD in
the drive to get the PSC 750 to work

solved.
------------ From HP Tech Support------------------------------------
Hello Allen,

Thank you for contacting HP's Customer Care e-mail support.

I understand that your PSC 750's Director software runs only with the
installation CD in the CD-ROM drive.

This is the result of an incomplete installation. Some of the DLL
files
have not been copied from the CD to the hard drive. The most likely
cause is an antivirus program. Antivirus programs should always be
disabled prior to installing the all-in-one software, as stated in the
installation instructions. The registry is still directing to these
files on the software CD. Please go through the following document to
resolve the issue.

This document will explain which DLL files have to be copied from the
all-in-one software CD and to what folder on the hard drive. In
addition, some entries in the registry have to be redirected to this
folder.

* Solution one:
Try this solution first before trying the other two solutions.

Uninstall and reinstall the software

If the steps above do not correct the problem or additional problems
occur, the software will have to be removed and reinstalled. Uninstall
the HP software. HP Officejet G series owners should then download and
run the Uninstaller Utility from the HP Web site. The Uninstaller
Utility is located on the product software CD-ROM in the Uninstall
folder for the HP Officejet K, V, and PSC 700 series products.
Restart
the computer after running the forced uninstaller and then reinstall
the
software according the setup sheet.
Before installing, make sure that all applications are closed and
nothing is running in the background. The steps below show how to
disable background programs:

For Windows 95, 98 and Me

- Simultaneously press CTRL+ALT+DEL once to display the Close Program
window. Pressing the CTRL+ALT+DEL keys two times consecutively will
restart Windows.
- One at a time, highlight a program listing, except for Explorer and
SYSTRAY, then select End Task. This action only closes the program, it
does not delete it. It may be necessary to select End Task several
times
before a program will close.
- Press CTRL+ALT+DEL again to display the Close Program window, and
End
Task on another listing.
- Repeat until all are ended except for Explorer and SYSTRAY.

For Windows NT 4.0 and 2000

- Simultaneously press CTRL+ALT+DEL to see the Windows Security
window.
- Select Task Manager.
- Select the Processes tab.
- Scroll to the bottom of the list, highlight the last item in the
list
except the entries listed below (depending on Windows version, they
may
be listed) and then select End Process:

System Idle Process
System
smss.exe
csrss.exe
winlogon.exe
services.exe
lsass.exe
Explorer.exe
spoolss.exe
RpcSs.exe
taskmgr.exe
- Confirm by selecting Yes.
- Repeat until all items are ended, except any of the entries listed
above. Listings may vary with each system.

* Solution two

Try this solution if solution one did not correct the issue.

Install the software after copying it to the hard drive

Copy the files of the HP all-in-one software CD to a folder on the
hard
drive, specially created for that purpose. Install the driver from
that
folder, by locating and clicking setup.exe.

Make sure that all applications in the back- and foreground are
closed.
To do so, see the "Uninstall and reinstall the software" section of
this
document.

* Solution three

Try this solution if the other two solutions did not correct the
issue.

CAUTION: These instructions should only be attempted by experienced PC
users. Performing these steps incorrectly could damage the Windows
registry and not allow the computer to work correctly. Contact HP
Customer Care if you are unsure or uncomfortable performing any of the
steps listed below, or try performing the workarounds.

Step 1: Copy DLL files from the all-in-one CD-ROM to the hard drive

- Insert the all-in-one Software CD-ROM in the CD drive. Close the
install shield that may come up.
- Right-click Start and choose Explore to open Windows Explorer.
- On the left portion of the screen, select the CD-ROM drive.
- Locate the IS folder in the following path:[CD-ROM
drive]:\PSC750\IS.
- While holding the CTRL button on the keyboard, select the following
files in this folder to highlight them:
Hpodvm07.dll
Hpodvi07.dll

- Release the CTRL button.
- Click on the Edit menu and then Copy.
- Locate the path C:\Program Files\Hewlett-Packard\[HP all-in-one
model]
series\Bin.
- Right-click the Bin folder and select Paste from the menu. The DLL
files will now be copied from the CD to the Bin folder. If the files
are
already present, select the option to overwrite them. Close Windows
Explorer when finished.

Step 2: Make a backup of the registry

Before changing values in the registry, it is recommended to make a
backup. In case of errors, the original registry file can be restored.
The following routine will explain how to backup the registry:

- Click Start and select Run.
- Type regedit in the Open field and click OK.
- Click the Registry menu and select Export Registry File.
- In the Export Registry File window, select in the Save in field a
folder to export the registry file to. Make sure to note the path of
the
folder.
- Type a name in the Name field. Also make a note of the name.
- Click Save. The registry file will be saved with a .reg extension.

In case of error(s), the following steps help restoring the previous
registry:

- Click Start and select Run.
- Type regedit in the open field and click OK.
- Click the Registry menu and select Import Registry File.
- In the Import Registry File window, select the folder in the Look in
field where the registry file was exported.
- Click the back-up registry file (with the .reg extension).
- Click Open.

Windows 2000 users can start with the next section in order to enable
permissions for making changes in the registry. Owners of different
operating systems should skip the next section and go to "Changing
registry entries for all Windows operating systems." That section will
explain how to find the correct registry entries and how to change it.

Enabling permissions in Windows 2000 before changing registry entries

Prior to performing the steps below, the permissions in the registry
may
need to be modified.

- Select Start, then Run.
- Type in Regedt32, then click OK.
- Select the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT window and highlight the first entry,
which should be HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT.
- Select Security from the menu at the top and select Permissions.
- Select the Everyone entry and make sure that Full Control has a
check
in Allow
- Select OK to make the change. Windows will update the permissions
for
all of the entries on this window. This may take a few minutes.
- Close the Registry Editor.

Step 3: Changing registry entries for all Windows operating systems

There are entries in the Windows registry that Windows uses to locate
the file. These entries must be checked and modified, if necessary, so
that Windows will look for the file in the new locations instead of
the
CD-ROM.

- When in the Registry Editor, select Find from the Edit menu.
- Type the following value in the Find window: HPODVM07.dll
- Click Find Next.
- Examine the entry found. It should list the location that the file
was
saved to on the hard drive.
- If the data has the CD-ROM location listed instead of the hard drive
location, right-click the entry in the right pane of the Registry
Editor
under the Name tab and select Modify from the menu.
- In the Edit String window, modify the information in the Value data
field to read: C:\PROGRA~1\HEWLET~1\HPOFFI~1\BIN\HPODVM07.DLL.
- Click OK to save the change.
- Press F3 to continue looking. Review and correct all entries found
that are specifying a location on a drive. There will be several of
entries like this for this file. Repeat this step until the registry
has
been completely searched and all occurrences of the file have been
checked.
- When finished looking through the registry, follow Steps 2 through 8
for the file: HPODVI07.dll. Replace any entries that list a location
on
the CD-ROM drive with C:\PROGRA~1\HEWLET~1\HPOFFI~1\BIN\HPODVI07.DLL.
- When finished searching, close the Registry Editor. The Director
should now open normally.
