Can someone tell me what an ADF (automatic document feeder) does?
What I want to do: have X amount of documents and have the scanned and
save unattended.

Does a printer with an ADF do this?

Thanks.

@i39g2000cwa.googlegroups.com:

ADF is exactly that, a auto document feeder.
In the case of a printer, it feeds the paper for it to print, something
every consumer printer has.

Your after a scanner with a ADF.

All in one printer/scanner things, like the MP780 would do.
Or a scanner by itself with a ADF.

And it will do exactly what your after..

X can be fairly limited on some, like, 15 sheets max, and you pay a lot of
$$$ if you want duplex scanning and a decent input tray.

Research scanners, or scanner/printer combo's.

Yes: the one I used required that all input be the
same size but successfully handled very different
textures of paper, all in a single stack, i.e. no
paper jams. (I think this was a Xerox, approx.
$25,000 cost. Output paper jammed more often
than bulk input.)

There are very few printers without ADF. Even the cheapest £30 printers
have ADF

Actually printers don't have ADF; they just have
paper trays, or sheet feeders. Printers don't
feed documents they feed paper and produce
documents. ADF is a feature of copiers.
Multipurpose machines that have scanners have ADF;
but it is still a copy function.
