Does anyone have any suggestions?

The fuser unit on my QMS Magicolor 330 has developed a bad spot on the
roller that the toner is sticking to. This of course makes ugly marks
across the page and even causes it to jam with heavy toner.

The fuser unit is rated for 100,000 pages but only has about 14,000 on
it. Its 2 years old and out of warranty, but the death of this fuser is
certainly premature.

The service technician where I purchased the printer will charge $1220
to fix it. The fuser unit alone is $1070.

Does anyone know where I can get a remanufactured fuser unit for this
printer or anywhere that will refurbish this one.

Any suggestions are appreciated. I may be in the market for a new
tabloid color laser printer.

Thanks,
Jay Raney

Our suppliers only have the generic toners for the QMS Magicolor 2 so
far, and no fuser components. Likely you have tried changing the fuser
cleaning roller and a new Fuser Oil/C-roller kit, as they are only
about $30.00. Although we have never worked on the QMS color lasers,
if the fuser is for sure the problem, and not the Belt Unit; and if it
is not scored or starting to de-laminate, there are solvents like
Fedron (hard to source) which will dissolve baked on toner.

It's probably best to call in a second tech - preferrably not QMS
authorized to see what can be done. If the fuser is pooched, he can
likely determine in less than an hour.

In fact, I never have replaced the oil roller. This is almost certainly the problem. There is no cleaning
roller in this printer only the oil roller.
I was unaware that it should be replaced. The manual say that it is rated for 20,000 pages ( variable of
course depending on printing conditions ) and that it should be replaced after this time or when the printer
gives the message "REPLACE FUSER OIL ROLLER". I never got such a message. In fact, there are guages on the
printer that indicate the usage of various consumables in the printer. The guage for the oil roller is only
about half way from the end. The roller felt like it still had oil in it to me, so how was I to know. I spoke
to QMS about this and they wouldn't do anything to help me. I feel cheated. Either the fuser was defective
and developed this bad spot prematurely, or the printer failed to inform me that I should replace the oil
roller. How am I to know that there isnt some other component on the verge costing me in excess of $1000. If
replacing the oil roller is so critical to the life of the printer, I feel that QMS should have made a
stronger effort to bring that to my attention.

Thanks for your advice John. I will try to find another tech to talk to. It would be nice if I could simply
remove baked on toner, but I suspect that it is actually de-lamminated at that spot.
