Helix Nebula the Science Cloud

having an impact on the private sector but also the public sector including
research organizations such as CERN, ESA and EMBL. The feasibility of such a
transformation is of great interest to the suppliers of cloud-based services
and to the national and European funding agencies. The Helix Nebula
initiative is a preliminary step towards a European cloud-based scientific
e-infrastructure: Helix Nebula - the Science Cloud.

Moving Beyond IT Outsourcing - Can Clouds Transform Science?
Clouds are rapidly joining high-performance computing system, clusters and
Grids as viable platforms for scientific exploration and discovery. As a
result, understanding application formulations and usage modes that are
meaningful in such a hybrid infrastructure, and how application workflows
can effectively utilize it, is critical.
A while ago, we had the chance to speak to Manish Parashar about the role of
Clouds in science and engineering. Manish is professor of electrical and
computer engineering at Rutgers University, and founding director of the
Rutgers Discovery Informatics Institute (RDI2), and of the National Science
Foundation Cloud and Autonomic Computing Center (CAC). Read the full

to ISC Cloud participants for the second time following last yearąs cozy
reception. We would like our participants to get acquainted with this
winemaking region and network in an exceptional setting in amongst the
vines.
The evening will start with an introduction to the history and philosophy of
the Dr. Bürklin-Wolf wines, followed by wine tasting and dinner.

Bürklin-Wolf is one of the foremost producers of dry wines in Germany. The
vineyard essentially produces Riesling wines, which are amongst the best in
the country. Regional specialties and wine from the property will be served
as part of this unforgettable evening. A bus transfer will bring the
participants to the location.
How to Get to Mannheim
Transport from Frankfurt airport, to Mannheim is by ICE high speed train (30
minutes), or Lufthansa Airport Shuttle bus

Mannheim is the second largest city in the region of Baden-Württemberg. The
center of Mannheim is laid out like a chess board, with no real street
names. Addresses in the Quadrat take the form of a grid reference, such as
Q3, 12 designating a block, so it is best to navigate by "following" the
blocks rather than the streets. If you get lost a rather high probability,
simply ask a local they will be glad to help.
Among the places youąll enjoy visiting in Mannheim include the Water Tower
built in the arte-nouveau style, Mannheim Palace which is part of todayąs
University of Mannheim, the church, Christuskirche, which houses the
original Steinmeyer organ with about 8000 pipes, thus making it one of the
largest organs in Germany.
If you do get the chance to get out of the city, you should definitely make
a day trip to Heidelberg youąll never regret this experience! Itąs
considered a German jewel because of its breathtaking baroque charm of
narrow streets, picturesque houses and of course the world-famous Schloss
(castle ruins).
Mannheim in September
According to local weather forecasts, Mannheim will stay partly sunny next
Monday and Tuesday, with 60 percent chances of light rain shower during the
day. However, the good news is that, the temperature will not drop below 13
