Hi all,

I'm surprised that no one else has started a tread about the
cost of vxWorks/tornado. I have been a vxWorks developer for almost 8
years now. I am, howver, starting to look for less expensive alternatives.
Don't get me wrong, I love vxWorks! I even Like tornado! I just cannot
justify the cost anymore!! Especially things like 11K$ for Java!!!
and thats on top of the 19K or so for tornado!! I am also a low volume
kind of developer. None of my projects will ever amount to more than
5 or 10 items installed, so a price of $1000 for a runtime license puts
off many of my potential users. Plus a different development license for
PPC and 68K? Now I'm at 40K? Thats a real hard sell to my management
when they see a full up visual c++ for about 1/10 of that!

I'm starting this thread not to gripe (ok, maybe a little), but I see
a real threat to vxworks coming from windows CE2! I do not want to use
a microsoft product, but may be forced to based on price! The
price of the hardware, price of the os, price of the runtime license, and
price of developement environment!!! I'm sure I will hear, "You get
what you pay for", but if windows CE will do the job at 1/10 the cost, then
I will be forced to use it. Remember how the PC killed the Mac in sales?
Where is apple now? It is a better platform, just way too expensive!

Make vxWorks a comodity! Lower the prices, fix the licensing, make it where
I can afford to use it!! Please Help ME!!

Thanks for listening

Rick

I agree that the price to develop for VxWorks is excessively high. While
WRS does provide a good real-time OS, we have considered moving
to other systems strictly based on price.

I agree that WindowsCE or something else (RTEMS?) might easily take over
VxWorks position in the rankings due to this high cost.

Hello Rick

I am or your side, but I cannot help you.
We have to change the control system of our machines from windows to an
VME-RTS for some hard timings (PowerPC-CPU).
We also think about other solutions, but we need some other features like
networking, worldwide service via modem, and some else.
VxWorks and psos+ are the only RTS who can do this and so we also have to
pay.
