Consider ecos, an open source embedded os. See

Green Hills' Integrity RTOS is another option. There is
an excellent transition story too.

- To start, port your application over to the tools
(MULTI IDE) but continue building for a vxWorks target.
The MULTI IDE completely supports vxWorks.

- Second, port Integrity over to your custom board (if
applicable) taking advantage of the vxWorks kernel level
API porting layer for Integrity and using the MULTI
debugger with the Green Hills Probe for COP targets.
MULTI also supports debugging via the VisionICE/PROBE,
Agilent 5900a/b, and Macraigor Wiggler/Raven,etc.

- Third, port your application over to Integrity with
minimal effort using the vxWorks Application level API
porting layer for Integrity and complete POSIX SCA/PSE52
library.

- Lastly, start shipping your products at a lower cost
since Integrity is royalty free.

I must agree. When doing a technology evaluation, one
should never put full trust in marketing material nor
marketing muscle. I recommend anyone interested in the
INTEGRITY RTOS get an in-house evaluation along with an
on-site demonstration.

Yes, I second that. I have an issue here though, Wind River
does not seem to offer free trial for prospective customers
so that people can't compare Tornado/vxWorks against their
competitors.

Here are the URLs for free trial goodies offered by embedded
OS players.

I would highly recommend Linux as an alternative. Build your own distro
if you have the time, just for the learning experience. Or, if you
don't, contact Monta Vista or another of the several available vendors.
The other competing OS'es here have hung their hat on the roalty-free
argument, which is exceptionally important, but I think that you will
find that Linux will take you farther, faster. If you have developers
who have familiarity with developing and running applications in a unix
environment, then the transition should be almost seamless for them, as
your intended target running linux will function _exactly_ like a host
pc running linux. Further, Linux has the advantage that you can
leverage other open source projects to fill in commodity function for
your project. For instance, does your project require that you be able
to transfer files using tftp? Under many other Os'es you would be
required to purchase that functionality from a vendor, or write it
yourself. At the very least you would need to integrate some amount of
tftp code into your project. Under linux, go find the source for the
tftp client that ships with red hat (or whatever open source tftp
project you like), build it with a cross compiler (linux running on the
target means you will have no api mismatch issues), put it in your
target root file system, and you're done. That simple.
Go with Linux. You won't be dissapointed.

Mike,

I applaud you for your approach. This is a switch from what I am used to
from your company. I hope your attitude permiates the rest of your
company, either now or in the near future. GHS left a very bad taste in my
mouth several years ago (from a "marketing type"), and the support seemed
to be colored by that same person who tried to use "marketing muscle" on
me. I hope this positive trend continues.

OS9 from Microware offers a free Eval CD as well.
Their Codewright IDE is a blast!

How about Micro/OS? Really inexpensive,
free for educational use, all source code included.

http://www.ucos-ii.com

I've used Micro/OS in more than one product, on 3 different CPUs
(MIPS, PPC, ARM)

Which begs the question... when you ask about
alternative OSes, what features do you want?

vxWorks is MUCH MUCH more than an OS...
