Can anyone tell me what version of the various gnu tools ship with
vxWorks 5.5.1. Or possibly they come with Tornado 2.2.1. I don't have
the WRS products but just need to know the gnu tool versions.

Tks,

The compilers are version 2.96+, which you won't find on any
public archive. The problem is that Wind's distributions of
GCC came from its semiconductor partners, and they didn't wait
for the compiler to be integrated by the FSF.

Or possibly they come with Tornado 2.2.1.

Same answer - 2.96+.

I have been trying out Tornado 2.2.1 recently. Mine is for MIPS instead of
PPC, but the version should be the same. For me, Wind River documentation
classifies it as 2.96+.

07:59 AM bin{}$ ./ccppc.exe --version
gcc-2.96

But this is not the official 2.96 release of gcc. Wind River applies
their own patches and set their own version number.

Thanks for the info. It's a bit older than I thought. Do you know if
they share their relevant updates with gcc project and/or release their
source under GPL? Or do they just supply each customer the toolchain
code? Also, just curious, how do they get gcc to run under windows? Cygwin?

I am porting a vxworks project to another gcc based RTOS called RTEMS.

This page makes me think that they give their patches back to the GCC
project. Also, since there are "wrs" options for compiling GCC. Here's a
page that describes building GCC for wrs to run on Linux.

And here's a little more info from the vxworks and Tornado 2 FAQ

Q: Details on version GCC 2.96 distributed by WindRiver

A: I'll just clear up one thing here - the 2.96 that WRS distributes and
the 2.96 that came with some Linux distros (notably some RH ones), are not
the same at all. Wind decided to use the number 2.96 for their release
(which is based on 2.95.x + some fixes from Wind's own testing and some
additional features from semiconductor partners for specific CPUs) since
it was not slated to be used by the FSF for any release - they were moving
to the 3.x numbers. Unfortunately, Cygnus/RH had the same idea, hence this
confusion. (From: John, john_...@yahoo.com)

The FAQ also seems to suggest that cygwin is used to get windows build
tools:

Q: After upgrading from T2.0 to T2.2 the compilation becomes much slower

A: T2.2 comes with a dll from cygwin that provides a unix style API. (I
dont remember the name), Windriver support said to replace this the latest
dll from cygwin (they sent me one and it is the same as what cygwin
distributes). It fixed the slow builds for me. (From: Jansyn,

In Tornado 2.2, it was still Cygwin, but the current versions in
the cumulative patches for Tornado 2.2 (gcc 2.96+) have a mingw32
library interface. It's faster as well as more reliable, according
to the tech support folks.
