Forrest Kenney has asked me to announce that some fixes he
made for some other USB devices now allows the built-in USB
port on the XP1000 to work. You will need to craft an entry
for it in sys$use_config.dat.

He didn't say explicitly, but I assume this code will be in
VMS v8.3 or in a soon-to-come update.

In other news, lovers of USB toys will be happy to learn that
the USB Missile Launcher is now running on VMS. The main
complaint so far (from other VMS developers) is that Forrest
gets all the neat toys to play with. There is no word on
how many orders for this toy have been placed from the Nashua
area. :-)

In case you have some spare time and money, and want to play
with one of the coolest toys around, you can get one at:
http://www.iwantoneofthose.com/search.do?productCode=mislau .
They ship *very* quickly, and I am a satisfied customer.
In fact, I think it took longer for FedEx to deliver one
from me to Forrest than it did for IWOOT to get them to
me from England!

You will need to craft an entry for the missile launcher in
sys$use_config.dat. A sample entry for the launcher is in
the example code (again, I assume this will be in V8.3 or a
soon-to-come update).

The user interface is very crude, and is waiting for someone
to volunteer to write a DECwindows interface. Any volunteers?

I think you mean sys$user_config.dat. In any case this is good news,
though of course it arrived the week after I put an NEC-based card in my
XP1000. So now I'll have four ports that I need to find something to
plug into.

I would settle for getting my Apple keyboard and mouse working with my
XP1000 and OpenVMS v8.2. They are "working" from the point of view of
the UCM utility -- they show up as tentative when I plug them in, I add
them, and they are then listed as permanent devices with the correct
drivers (KBD0 and MOU0, respectively). After unplugging and replugging
them, they are again recognized as permanent devices. However, no
amount of typing or mousing around can get a rise out of DECwindows,
even after restarting DECwindows.

Aha, searched further after typing that and found:

http://forums1.itrc.hp.com/service/forums/questionanswer.do?threadId=7806

where the deep, dark magic to disable the PS/2 devices and hack the
DECwindows configuration may be found, along with warnings about system
crashes and the limitation that DECwindows cannot start automatically
with this configuration. Do any of the v8.3 changes make this less
deep, dark, and dangerous, or lift the restriction that DECwindows has
to be started manually?

There is no planned support for "overriding" the PS2 KB/Mouse (although that
may be a side effect of a change I am looking at for the next VMS release
after V8.3. I use my DS10 in the manner described all the time.

What I probably should cobble together is a way to easily allow a user to
dump out keystrokes so they can create a mapping table.

Doesn't xev (in DECW$EXAMPLES) do that?

Sorry, I meant DECW$UTILS.

Two corrections:

That should be sys$system:sys$user_config.dat

The code is in F8.3 and beyond.

Also, as I discovered with my XP1000, there is an environment
variable, usb_enable, that must be set to ON (mine was set to
OFF. If it is set to OFF, SHOW CONFIGURATION will show the
Embedded USB port as not enabled.

I now have a working USB rocket launcher protecting my
VMS system. :-)
