Does someone know if there is a new forum for support on the Personal
Alpha emulator ? (freeware version of Charon-Alpha).
The one listed on the PA page is no more used since one year.
I experiment a 20 mn time shift per day (every day, the Alpha clock is
late by 20 mn compared to my PC clock)
config is PA 2.0.16, HP Pavilion XPP SP3
Thanks,
D.
there currently is no forum for the Personal Alpha.
Volker.
I'm running a PersonalAlpha V1.1.2 in a multi-architecture cluster
since a couple of years and have not seen this behaviour. But I'm
using NTP, so this may make a difference.
Can you use NTP ?
Do you use the Stromasys IDLE tool (IDLE V1.2) ?
Is your PersonalAlpha very busy ? High CPU or IO load ? High network
laod ?
Volker.
Assuming that it runs VMS then this is probably as good a
place as any.

I do not. How do you do that ? (actually, what is NTP ? Network Time
Protocol ???)

I do not know. I use the standard distribution I got from the
stromasys site

High CPU, yes. I'm doing heavy text processing in DCL and Fortran (see
another post in here)

No.
If Arie does not create a new Forum, I will. This emulator is a really
nice piece of software and needs a meeting point (unless the Company
gives up with support)
.
For those here who do not know CHARON-VAX/Alpha and the Alpha hobbyist
version from STROMASYS (formerly Software Resources int'l), Robert
Boers and his Pals were formerly part of DEC Enginnering, in charge of
emulation (RSX-11M AME, then VAX to Alpha, DECmigrate then ... good
bye COMPAQ in 1998)
NTP is Network Time Protocol and can be configured as part of TCPIP
services with @TCPIP$CONFIG. First enable it, then edit SYS$SPECIFIC:
[TCPIP]TCPIP$NTP.CONF and add one or two NTP servers using the
'server' statement. Then start NTP.
Volker.
No! If the one and only server configured has a problem, you are dead
in the water.
Two servers is the worst possible configuration for it is written that a
man with two clocks can never be certain what time it is!
Configure four servers in order to survive the failure of one. Five for
the failure of two, seven for the failure of three. As long as there
enough sane servers to outvote the insane servers you are OK!

Ok, how can I find Time Servers ? On my Mac  this is automatic.
I have only a server installation choice, no Client.
the NTP client is configured under 'server components'. The
configuration in TCPIP$NTP.CONF decides, whether NTP then acts as a
server or client.
Volker.

1 - Disable service on this node
2 - Start service on this node
[E] - Exit NTP configuration

to manually run NTPDATE, you'll have to stop the NTP service first.
You can check the operation of the NTP service with TYPE SYS$SPECIFIC:
[TCPIP$NTP]TCPIP$NTP_RUN.LOG
Volker.
Actually, you should have copied the existing TCPIP$NTP.TEMPLATE file
as TCPIP$NTP.CONF and edited that file with your server statements. As
suggested in the TCPIP documentation.
Volker.
You cannot run NTPDATE on a system that has an NTP server process
running. NTPDATE is meant to talk to and external time server directly.
If you have configured and started the NTP server process, and if your
*.pool.ntp.org servers are PINGable, you basically have to do nothing.
Look in the NTP server log file (co-located with the conf file) to see
how the NTP process calls the time servers and adjusts time
automagically. See Hoff's site for nice discussions on computer time.
If, for some reason, you want to use NTPDATE, you first have to stop the
NTP server process (by the same method used when starting it, TCPIP$CONFIG)

The last time I looked there were links to lists of stratum 1 and
stratum 2 servers available at:
http://support.ntp.org/bin/view/Servers/WebHome
Explore the site to learn useful and needful things about NTP. If you
are using a server not on the public servers lists, be certain that you
have the owner's permission.
Google for "NTP" and "Wisconsin" for a horror story. Try "NTP" and
"PHK" for another, similar, story.
Don't add any new horror stories!
I think you may have misunderstood something. You configure one or more
"servers" to get the time from! Normally, you would configure four,
five, or seven servers. Your system can become a server in its own
right and serve time to other systems at your site.
Something is using PORT 123. The most probable cause is another
instance of NTPD.
Stromasys is planning to build a forum for Personal Alpha emulator,
hopefully it won't take too long. An upgrade version of Personal Alpha
with support of Windows Vista and Windows 7, will be released in one
or two weeks.

So, if your Mac is running NTP, why not use the same server?
Most ISPs provide NTP on thier routers, though many of their support
folks don't know how to spell it.
And various institutions provide time service, try Google to find
some.
