Hello everybody,

I'm having a strange issue trying to do remote DECwindows from my virtual-vax running OpenVMS 7.3. I am using xming and/or VcXsrv on windows to attach to the VMS X client. I create a display on OpenVMS, start DECW$STARTLOGIN.EXE and I can log in to the machine, but I can not drag any windows around, resize, etc. If I run xming in multi-window mode it works (with each decwindows window encased in their own MS Windows window) but its not really what I'm after.

From my unix experience, this would seem to me like the window manager isn't running on the virtual vax and and when running in a single window in xming I don't have a window manager there either, so the windows don't really work. But... I didn't think that was possible with DECwindows.

I also tried using the XDM server in TCPIP 5.3, I get the same thing.

If anybody has any ideas let me know,

Thanks
Bill S.

IIRC, try decw$session.exe, instead.

DECW$STARTLOGIN will usually create the session manager.

In xming, you must use a mode that allows "foreign" (VMS) window managers.

When logged in, open a terminal (DECterm) window, and issue the command
$MC DECW$MWM.

So as it turns out the window manager was running the whole time. It appears I'm just having trouble with xming. If I use MobaXterm, everything works great. I believe I'm using xming in a mode that requires a foreign window manager. Oh well, I'll keep playing with it. At least its working with MobaXterm.

Thanks for the help guys.
