Hi there, Google couldn't help so be grateful if you can.
I looking for copies of:

* VXT-2.1.tar1 and
* VXT-2.1.tar2

Why, bitmapped conversions of some of the better terminal
"programmer" fonts xmbdfedited and run through my home-brew
installation scripts haven't always worked. So I figured,
why not use DEC's own utilities for Solaris. Off those tar
balls, I'm keen to acquire a copy of:

* fixSunfonts
* instvxtfonts
* mkvxtfonts

So, if you've got copies of c. early 2000's archives and
are able to locate them for me, I shall be grateful. Thx.

The final VXT kits (for OpenVMS) are on the Freeware, if that helps.
I'd expect the download images to be the same.

Hoff, as one of those who requested it, thanks for your
efforts in, of late, getting some of the InfoServer Function
Access keys and making them available on Freeware V8. The
VXT kits for other than VMS and the InfoServer aren't on
freeware though AFAIK.

I've tabulated what's there (http to eisner ~jackson/
vxt_freeware_contents.html - not to be un-obfuscated - thx).
On DECcampus, V2.2 was promised.., was late.., was canned.
The directory info is suspect. In some DECcampus releases
the directories are listed as blank or "?", and [VXT012] is
probably [VXT021]. Looks like the VMS & InfoServer kits were
distributed together, and then a separate disk for OSF/1, but
that the Unix kits (SunOs, HPUX, AIX) weren't. Possibly the
Unix kits were tape only. While the tar kits would be nice,
I'd settle for the binaries off the backup of some old campus
Sun. Thanks.

I am well aware of that.

Until and unless you find the Sun kits, extract and configure and use
the images from the VMS kits.

AFAIK, the downloaded bits are the same, so you extract the bits from
the VMS kits and MOP download them,

There was a MOP implementation for Sun, IIRC.

Or boot VMS via simh or such, and download the bits from there.

As my query isn't on the freeware your pointer to it didn't help.

Not sure of the relevance and what's meant by downloadable bits. No
mention in my OP of MOP on SunOS. A question of not reading the OP?

The specific font utilities I'm after are:

* fixSunfonts
* instvxtfonts
* mkvxtfonts

Clearly, if they're not binaries but shell scripts, happy days, the
AIX ones or the HPUX ones could easily be adapted. If can help with
nabbing a copy off an old campus unix box, I'd appreciate it. Thx.

I'm not purposefully trying to make this more difficult for you.

Tried asking at #classiccmp or scrounging at BitSavers?

I'd start with the assumption that the kits you want no longer exist,
and it's fairly likely that anybody that's here in c.o.v. largely has
VMS-ish stuff and generally not stuff for other operating systems.
Sure, you might get lucky, but tend to I'd leave that to the two
Frenchmen in chrome helments.

Starting from the assumption that the kits no longer exist, what can
you do? Remaster some form of functional download kits for the VXT
gear yourself, using the bits from the VMS kits, and using simh or
such? Scrounge MOP for your operating system? Your call, of course.

I have the following files on the lab server here:

VXT021.RELEASE_NOTES
VXTKT021.A
VXT_SYSMAN_INSTALL_DEC_OSF1_AXP.PS
VXT_SYSMAN_INSTALL_SUNOS.PS

The largest file is the second, around 5.4Mbytes, assume that this is the
binary that gets downloaded to the VXT. Still have a VXT in store somewhere,
but never got round to getting it working. Mop is available on Linux now,
so you may be able to use that as the download server...

Could upload somewhere or even email them to you if they are of any use ?...

Chris

That looks like the VMS kit, and that's on the Freeware, and that's not
what the OP wants.

I seem to have a CD labelled

VXT Software 2.1 for OSF1/ULTRIX
AG-PYQKC-BE
January 1994

Documentation comes for various Unices,
including SunOS, and mentions fixSunfonts.
I didn't look at the CD itself, I'm too lazy
to boot an Ultrix box right now.
Maybe this is what you are looking for?

Would be nice if an iso of this disk could me made and put up

Probably, but the VXT can use bootp to download it's image and it's trivial
to write a bootp script for unix or linux to enable that. May have
to fiddle a bit to get all the fonts in the right place, but it's not that
difficult.

Nearly all hacking older kit needs at least a little effort :-)...

Um, this is exactly what I've been suggesting to the OP.

Found it. It contains the mentioned tar files.
Actually it's in UFS format,
but I can provide an ISO copy too.
