United Airlines typically waives change fees for most Economy and premium cabin tickets for flights within the U.S., between the U.S. and Mexico or the Caribbean, or for international travel originating in the U.S. This applies to changes made before the scheduled departure of the original flight. However, there are some exceptions to this policy, such as Basic Economy tickets and tickets booked through another airline.

Change fees for Basic Economy tickets:

Basic Economy tickets do not allow changes to the reservation.

However, passengers can add United Economy benefits to their Basic Economy ticket for a fee. This will allow them to change their flight to a new flight of equal or lesser value without paying a change fee.

Change fees for tickets booked through another airline:

Tickets booked through another airline (if the ticket receipt does not begin with 016) are not eligible for the no-change-fee policy.

Passengers may be charged a change fee for these tickets.

24-hour booking policy:

Passengers can make changes to their reservation within 24 hours of buying their ticket without paying a fee.

This applies to all types of tickets, including Basic Economy and tickets booked through another airline.

Standby for free:

If your flight is more than 24 hours away, you may be able to fly standby for free on another United flight.

Standby is not guaranteed, so there is a risk that you will not be able to get a seat on the next available flight.
