If both halves of that backcourt return next season, feel free to retroactively remove the Cougars from this list. Because while Walker is a huge loss, getting to move Ja'Vier Francis (16.6 points, 13.5 rebounds, 4.3 blocks per 40 minutes) into the starting lineup could be a win. And it's not like Houston will need 30 wins to make the tournament next year. Something like 19-13 would probably be enough, and it should be able to get there with Sasser and Shead.
In the closing years of his life, as his health waned, Knight warmed to the program. The mending was aided by the fact that one of his former players, Mike Woodson, was hired as Indiana's coach.
The college basketball field feels wide-open, with about 15-20 teams Iβm confident in that have a chance of making it to the Final Four. Itβs hard to predict how the tournament will go this early in the season, but so far, these four teams have impressed me enough to put them above the rest.
We all know about Kansas. The number one team in the country has all the talent and skill necessary to win the National Championship. The current favorites will be led by Hunter Dickinson in the front court and Dajuan Harris in the backcourt.
During the 2022-23 season, Knight made the short trip from his home to Indiana practice multiple times per month to watch Woodson tutor his team. Quietly, and without seeking attention for it, Knight chose to embrace the place that brought him to glory and the forefront of American sports.
The Jayhawks are projected to be the best team in defensive efficiency and are expected to be top ten in offensive efficiency according to Ken Pomeroy. The expectation should be a deep run in the tournament for the Jayhawks, and I believe thereβs a high chance of that happening.
Beyond that, Buchanan will be better than Jordan Minor, Jacob Groves, and fellow freshman Anthony Robinson and will establish himself as the best pure big on this roster. Minor has the highest floor with the physicality, rebounding, and experience while Groves brings a shooting touch and additional experience to the table. But Buchanan can be just as much of a threat as Minor in the pick and roll, be as good of a rebounder, and be a better defender.
