I'm running Personal Alpha + VMS 8.3 on a PC.
I can solve DNS via the routing param I gave with TCPIP$CONFIG,
actually my ADSL router which also does DHCP. Address is 192.168.1.1
Emulator is 192.168.1.13, local PC is 192.168.1.20
I can do FTP from the PC to VMS, I can ping from VMS to the router,
but I cannot ping anyone else, including the PC (real issue when you
want to do a $ set display/create...)
What did I forgot pls ?
Thanks a lot.
It's not clear to me if you set up VMS to get its address from DHCP. If
so, forget it. VMS DHCP clients have trouble with "modern" DHCP servers.
Use a fixed address instead. VMS is a server, and deserved its own fixed
address :-) Then set up a routing gateway (probably your router address)
and you should be fine, provided you run the NDIS protocol on the
P.Alpha in shared mode.

Hi Didier,
I am not an expert in this field, but I have the same experience.
Personal Alpha is not able to contact its host directly. I do not know
why.
I am running Personal Alpha on Windows XP on VMware Fusion on Mac OS
X. In this setup, Personal Alpha cannot communicate with Windows XP,
but it can communicate with Mac OS X. Also, Windows XP can communicate
with Mac OS X.
Interestingly, when I run a second Windows XP virtual machine with
Personal Alpha, I can cluster the two OpenVMS instances together. A
cluster in a box!

I chose a fixed address
I restarted TCP/IP
I double checked my Firewall on the PC
I have the router as my gateway
I run NDIS in shared mode
I stil cannot ping the PC nor anyone outside.
Any other clues ?
I succeeded to have all this stuff working perfectly a few months ago
(on the same PC).
Thanks
it's Windows, isn't it ?! So what worked once may not work again ;-(
I can only confirmed, that I was able to communicate from
PersonalAlpha to the host PC when using the Windows LAN interface in
shared mode from PersonalAlpha in more than one installation.
I can still do it on our PC in the office (running PersonalAlpha
V1.2.2 and the related Alpha Emulator NDIS5 driver).

Ok Volker, now where should I start to make it work, then ?
Thanks.

Volker.
This is suggestive of a hardware problem. Can you ping the router? Can
you ping ANYTHING inside your network? Just about anything will do, a
laptop . . . ? Do you see a "link light" on the back of your Alpha?
How about a link light on whatever device your Alpha is connected to?
The lack of a link light would be STRONGLY suggestive of a hardware problem.
this is about OpenVMS running on PersonalAlpha, a freeware version of
the CHARON-AXP Alpha emulator running on Windows. It is about sharing
the Windows LAN network card.
Volker.
Just an idea.
Are you running the interface and the switch port in Full Duplex? If
not, how can the card hear itself? I have seen this as a problem on
a number of virtualization products. Some recommend having more than
one NIC and not sharing but I would think the full-duplex should work.

I do have a problem on the PC, as I installed PA on my laptop, then
Xming, and in three tea spoon strikes (as we say over here) Bob was my
Uncle.
More, I cannot ping the tabletop from my laptop.
So, Let me see that in details and I come back.
Thanks for your time.
