I have inherited an Alpha 3000-500 running OpenVMS 7.1. It
apparently used to be a member of a cluster, but I don't
want it to be any longer. When it boots, it "asks" to join
the cluster and is accepted. How can I turn this off?
Hope this isn't too simplistic, but I need any help I can
get. Thanks much.

See the documentation or on-line help for the VAXCLUSTER parameter
(SYSGEN, SYSMAN PARAMETER).

Now, that said, make sure when it comes up that it doesn't try to mount
any disks that are mounted to nodes which still are cluster members. The
clean up will be extensive!

I had just figured this out! I had to set the VAXCLUSTER parameter to 0 and
reboot. Now it doesn't try to join cluster. Thanks!

The following assumes you have a copy of OpenVMS operating from a local
disk... Bootstrap the system conversationally -- see the OpenVMS FAQ
for details on how to do this, search for "conversational" -- and set
the VAXCLUSTER and NISCS_LOAD_PEA0 parameters to zero.

If the system is configured as a satellite (OpenVMS is downloaded from
an existing cluster) and you want to run standalone, you will need to
get a copy of OpenVMS loaded onto a local disk, and configured. The
steps involved are covered in the OpenVMS installation documentation.

You will want to look at the device the system is bootstrapping from.
If you hear a local disk chattering away and see the default boot device
is a disk, assume the former configuration. If a network controller,
assume the latter...

I would encourage an upgrade to V7.1-2 or V7.2-1...

Dave:

I am in the same situation and had done the conversational boot etc
and got the system to talk to me. It does try to mount disks from
other nodes but I couldn't isolate where it was originating. Could you
point me in the right direction to get rid of the mounts?

Thanks,
Marc
