To my suprise, when I received this months copy of Sys Admin Magazine
<http://ww.sysadminmag.com>, I was suprised and shocked to find a 2
disk 120-day trial of Microsoft's Windows Services For Unix 3.0. And on
the inside of the cd-rom sleeve/case is the following:

"Seamlessley integrate Microsoft Windows into your UNIX environment"

Microsoft Windows Services for UNIX 3.0 provides a full range of cross-platform
services geared towards customers wanting to integrate Windows into their
existing UNIX environments. With the built-in Interix subsystem technology,
Windows Services for UNIX 3.0 now provides platform interoperability and
application migration components in one fully integrated and supported product
from Microsoft"

Now why in the heck would any UNIX IT/Admin would want to add a very
buggy/virus ridden OS like Microsoft Windows into their environment. I
have been using UNIX & LINUX since BellLabs Unix, BSD from Berkely,
and Slackware Linux 2.0(Something) and I've also used Microsoft Windows.
But I can honestly say that if I have a seemlessly running UNIX environment,
adding Windows would be the last thing I would want to do. If you need
any insight as to why I wouldn't do it. Just check SecurityFocus
<http://www.securityfocus.com> and any other website that shows exploits/virri
for the Windows OS. There will be more than enough reasons not to do it. And
before anyone say's that I'm putting down Windows, and am using Forte's Agent
under Windows XP. I have Windows XP with a Slackware Linux 9.0 dual boot
going on. (Just hope my boss don't find that one out. Company Laptop and all)

I would love to hear from all of you admin's/IT people about this subject of
Windows integration into a UNIX environment. And if you would try the software
Windows Services for UNIX 3.0.

The company I work for uses Reflections-X to make windoze boxes look line
UNIX.

IMHO if the need arises to run Windoze based software on Linux there are
several alternatives to the one that your spamnmer mentioned and some of
them come free. I am exploring the possibility of using bochs under
Slackware.

I agree with them. What's the point? If you want to completely drop
Windows and have some expensive graphics or audio application you still
want to run and not just drop altogether with Windows, you can use
different tools to run a lot of Win32 applications on Linux. Other than
that, I don't see the point and would never do that.
