Hi,

I've heart that Solaris will provide the Doors concept to support fast
local IPC. But as far as I know, the interface is not yet standardized,
but NIS+ communicates via doors with the cache. Can anybody give me
some information, where to find more about the implementation and the
resulting improvement using doors instead of conventional SunRPC.

Thanks in advance,

Sebastian

This should be available in Solaris 2.6.

The interface has not yet been made available to the outside world;
nevertheless, some services in Solaris 2.5, such as the name service
cache daemon, use doors.

You will find pointers to the design and implementation of doors in
Spring (from which the Solaris implementation of doors has been
derived) on Sun's Spring Web pages, accessible on the World-Wide Web
at <URL: http://www.sun/com/tech/projects/spring>.

As far as performance is concerned, a door call requires a roughly
30-usec round trip on a workstation of "normal" power. Incidentally,
ONC RPC and doors are not mutually exclusive.

Should be: <URL: http://www.sun.com/tech/projects/spring/>.
