I am in the process of setting up a QNX 4.25 system running TCP/IP 4.25a.
The system will participate on a Microsoft LAN running WINS. I am able to
use dhcp.client to obtain an IP address on boot-up. The problem is that our
Microsoft networking apps use WINS to resolve hostnames, instead of DHCP.
As a result, my QNX machine can only be reached via its IP address, which
defeats the purpose of DHCP altogether.

The question: Is there any way to configure my QNX machine such that it's
hostname is recognized by WINS ?

Thank You,

You have several options:

1) Make a reservation in NT's DHCP for the mac address of the QNX box so
that the QNX box will always get the same ip address. Make a static entry
in the NT DNS for the QNX box. Then, when the 95/NT boxes do a name
lookup (DNS) they will get the QNX box's ip address.

2) Run SAMBA on the QNX box. It can then participate in a MS
domain/workgroup. I would suggest that this is overkill.

WINS is only used to resolve netbios hostnames into ip addresses. If you
have other unix/linux/qnx machines, you should also use DNS. Under NT,
the DNS can query WINS so if you configure your 95/NT machines to also
use DNS for netbios name resolution, you get the "best" of both worlds.

I have the opposite of your problem. I have no problem with the WINS after I
installed SAMBA but have not gotten around to handling DHCP. It provides the
NETBIOS features over TCPIP and can even act as its own WINS server.

One thing about SAMBA is that it can be a bear to configure. (lots of
parameters) If you choose to install SAMBA, let me suggest 'SAMBA: Integrating
UNIX and Windows' by John Blair (ISBN: 1-57831-006-7) Its gives a great
explanation of SAMBA and its configuration.

As for the DHCP, where can I locate the DHCP.client. I have looked some on the
QNX FTP and have yet to find it.

The source is at www.isc.org. The source is supposed to compile cleanly
for QNX but I had to fix a couple of DEFINE's and one typedef. I can look
those up if you have trouble. I just recently compiled it. I haven't
tested the client or server yet... maybe in a week or so.

I obtained dhcp.client (and all of TCPRT 4.25a, for that matter) from QUICS.
If you have registered your product serial #s with QNX via QUICS (telnet
quics.qnx.com), you will have access to their FTP server and its /updates
directory. Look for the tcprt425 files....

Good luck,

It ships with TcpIp, my Socket is 4.25c, aug 1998, and I have a
/usr/ucb/dhcp.client.

Yes, please, would appreciate this!
