Disabling LAN support

I need to get rid of the PMAC (parallel port) network adapter driver,
and then I do not need any LAN support any more; only TCP/IP. This is
a procedure where I am afraid to kill something: *Installing* any
network stuff is already hard (mainly if one doesn't know anything
about networking...), but *deinstallations* are even worse... :-(

Ok, this is what I tried:

REM out the following lines from my CONFIG.SYS:

REM DEVICE=C:\IBMCOM\PROTOCOL\NETBEUI.OS2
REM DEVICE=C:\IBMCOM\PROTOCOL\NETBIOS.OS2
REM DEVICE=C:\IBMCOM\MACS\PMAC.OS2

Then in IBMCOM\PROTOCOL.INI I deleted everything that seemed somehow
related to PMAC and/or NETBEUI or NETBIOS, so only this was left
over:

[PROT_MAN]
DRIVERNAME = PROTMAN$
[IBMLXCFG]
tcpip_nif = tcpip.nif
[tcpip_nif]
DriverName = TCPIP$

The effect is indeed that I can still go into the internet - ufff!!

But still I have the impression that "something" is wrong if I try to
test the "loopback interface" (which I may need for XFree86/2
eventually):

[C:\]ifconfig lo 127.0.0.1 up

[C:\]ping localhost
icmp: unknown protocol

[C:\]ping 127.0.0.1
icmp: unknown protocol

[C:\]

It is to say that there is a "localhost" entry in the "hosts" file,
and also the "HOSTS_FIRST" entry in CONFIG.SYS. But "unknown
protocol" looks to me that I have something broken...

Any helpful hints??

Thanks and greetings,
Cornelis
