Searching Google, I see a couple of postings re: the Epson Stylus C62 being
a solid OS/2 printer. The Epson web site has a refurbished model for $49.,
free parallel cable and shipping. With both USB and parallel connections,
plus what appears to be fairly current drivers...it's attractive.
Anyone got any experience with this particular model under OS/2?? Is
there support for Win-OS/2??
Much obliged...
If you are thinking about getting the refurbished unit, ask whether it
comes with an Ink supply. If not, you are already going to have to
spend another significant amount for ink, making it more of a question
whether to buy used or new.
I do not know what kind of ink supplies the C64 uses.
My printer cost $149 new, and had the four ink cartridges (a large
black, and smaller yellow, blue, and cyan) which cost about $70 to
replace. Printer prices dropped over the past year. I think the last
price I saw was $99, with a $20 mail in rebate, dropping the total to
$79 (with the $70 of ink!).
I believe the C84 has replaced the C82 now, however, and prices for it
are back up in the $129 range.
Other people have gotten other printers to work with OS/2 and eCS, but I
believe the Epson Stylus series is as easy as any to get working, and
gives as good output (based only on what I've read on the 'net).
Much obliged for the input - it does appear that the cartridges are
rather costly (as are most these days). It does come "fully armed",
but the ongoing cost of those buggers is enough to make one consider
taking the pluge on a laser.
BTW - does the Epson Stylus C82 have Win-OS/2 support?
In the meantime, I picked up an HP Deskjet 672c at the local "chop shop"
for $15. - it has current OS/2 drivers and Win-OS/2 support, and seems
to work reasonably well (limited testing so far). It's not whipser quiet,
but it is quieter than the Lexmark 7000...nor is it lightning fast. It does
seem to work for light printing tasks acceptably well, though...
I haven't been inside Win-OS/2 for years. However, as I recall, if the
printer is set up in a normal fashion, WIN-OS/2 is really just sending
data to the spool, not working directly with the printer. So I don't
know why it wouldn't work....
