Team,

I have been running the FreeType system driver for quite some time now. Recently
I downloaded the latest version 1.3.2, where I (for the first time in my memory)
had to decide at which DPI setting I should run the system.

My system runs on ATI Radeon X850 PCIE 256MB video card, using SNAP 505 build,
using 1920x1200 resolution.

I selected 72 DPI which upon reboot presented a system that felt familiar. I
then tried 120 DPI, which upon reboot presented problems in the ProNews/2
application. Basically the fonts when sized at 12 point were simply too big to
display in the app window to be legible, etc.

I rolled back to 96 DPI next and will test this one out soon.

My question is: what is the common thinking about the DPI & screen resolution on
our systems?

You certainly don't HAVE to decide, in fact you are strongly recommended
NOT to change the FreeType/2 dpi setting from the default of 72dpi unless
you really know what you're doing.

Even I'm not sure exactly what the effect of this setting is, which is
why I buried it on the "advanced" page.

See above. AFAIK the dpi setting in FreeType/2 is specific to the
internals of the FreeType API and has no relation that I'm aware of
to your OS/2 dpi settings.

This setting has been present in FreeType/2 since Michal's earliest
releases... possibly he understood what its effects were, but I can't
pretend that I do.
