Hi,

I've been trying to use a USB key for saving important files that need
to be on several computers. The key started out working on both the
eCS and the XP system, but after a while in the XP system it is no
longer recognized by the eCS one. I'm not sure, but it may have
started to fail on the eCS one after I wrote a file from 123 on the XP
one.

[c:\4os2]chkdsk f:
The current hard disk drive is: F:
SYS0026: The specified disk or diskette cannot be accessed.

I'm pretty sure that I'm at the latest USBMSD.SYS.

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

Are you using LVM. If so, this message is issued if the LVM information on the
device is missing or corrupted. Try using DFSee to fix the LVM information,
then eject and reinsert the device and run chkdsk x: /f, where x is the
assigned drive letter.

Silly question: Did you eject the key from windows?

Booting with a usb drive attached can cause the above problem. Try
ejecting the drive (you may need to use the command line to do this) and
then re-attaching.

What filesystem is in use on the usb key? - and what size is it?

Maybe USBcfg will come in handy for checking your usb configuration -
and also for the USB Storage FAQ

I don't remember partitioning the key with eCS, just used it as it came
from the store.

I'll have to give DFSee a try tomorrow.

Yes, I did. I'll re-do it and make sure.

I inserting it in a running system. The automounter worked, but the
drive was inaccessible.

I think it's got FAT on it from the store. I'm pretty sure that I
didn't partition or format on either XP or eCS.

I'll take a look.

I should also have asked if the drive is still accessible from windows?
- just wondering about the possibility of some sort of virus affecting
the drive.

Hi Pete,

Yes, it's still available on Windows, and all my Windows systems are
virus free (or as free as F-Secure AV can keep them).

I put it back in an XP box, chkdsk'ed it, ejected it.

Putting it back in the eCS box, it automounts (Drive F: is attached)
and shows up in Drives, but trying to access it results in: The Drive
cannot be accessed, and this is the same result as trying to chkdsk it
on eCS.

It may be worth having a look at the usb key using DFSee - www.dfsee.com
- to try to ascertain what is causing the problem.

Hi Paul,

Is the pen drive formated with FAT? or FAT32?

With FAT it should be recognized on the fly.

With FAT32 is a totally different question.
Check properties->details of the drive in eCS. It should tell you the
formated filesystem.

If it's FAT, it's a problem with USB

If it's FAT32, follow the following instructions to see if it helps

Edit config.sys, find the line with "CACHEF32.EXE"
Add /F at the end of the line.
Reboot, plugin the device and see if it work's.
