This is a 4x CD-ROM drive and a 650Mb re-writable MO drive which runs 8x of
a normal CD-ROM (1x) drive. It is great for storage and backups BUT I can
not find OS/2 drivers :-( The vendor promised me drivers as they are avalible
but I have not received them yet.
Does anyone know this drive and where to find drivers for it for OS/2 Warp ?
It comes with Mac and DOS/Win drivers but I would like to run it natively
under OS/2.
Any info out there, has anyone else tried this drive?
Thanks in advance...

My suspecion is that it will probably work with CorelSCSI drivers which
works with MO drives. I guess the bottom line is -- what does PD drive
report back for device type?

I don't have OS/2 CorelSCSI drivers. Are there such drivers for OS/2?
The DOS/WIN drivers that come with the drive are Corel. That is not
very useful under OS/2.
I have yet to install the drive as I am using my NEC CD-ROM all the time
and don't want to change until the drivers are installed. There is not
space enough to install both in my case :-(
When ready the NEC will go to my other PC with LINUX on it.
An others out there, I have read that Panasonic have a web site but can't
find it.

Some things you may be interested in:
1) Corel tech support claims that they no longer are developing drivers
for OS/2, but their existing MO drivers may work
2) Panasonic www site lists the PD Drive as OS/2 compatible. See
http://www.panasonic.com/comdex/imaging/pd.html
3) Panasonic technical support told me that a) there are drivers
available on IBM's BBS, though I haven't been able to find them on the
web version of IBM's OS/2 Device Driver Repository see:
http://www.europe.ibm.com/getdoc/psmemea/progserv/device/
but b) that panasonic does not give tech support for those drivers.
NOTE: I do not have access to IBM's BBS and would like to see if
these drivers really exist so if someone has access, could they do a
Z search for "PowerDrive" or "Panasonic". This totally unhelpful
person also did not know the name of the file which had PD compatible
drivers.
4) Also, some articles on the PowerDrive claim that Panasonic has OS/2
support. Can't remember the articles but do NEXIS search on "Panasonic &
Powerdrive" if you have access and want to find them (Article was dated
in August-October time frame.)
Obviously there is conflicting information about the PD's OS/2
compatiblity.
This has irritated me greatly. Fortunately, for me at least, I have had
this type of problem before and this time found out this information out
before I bought.
I urge all those interested in removable storage to not buy Panasonic PD
drives until they provide support for OS/2. But please call panasonic
and request OS/2 drivers.
For those that don't know what this is the PowerDrive2 and other
"Phase-changed Disks" (PD) optically (with a laser) change the crystaline
structure of the disk to indicate 1's and 0's, by varying the power of
the laser.
This is important because it allows direct overwrite on optical disks,
unlike most MO drives (except Sony's Minidisc style MO drives) and does
not require the magnet part of MO drives.
The PD drives currently out also are 4x CD-ROM drives. Besides
Panasonic, two other companies I know of make PD drives (can't remember
their names right now, sorry).
IMHO, this is a perfect replacement for a tape, and a good way to expand
storage since the 650 MB optical disks cost about $60 in onesies, and I
have seen them as low as $54 in volume.

jim
I have got the drivers, read on...

I phoned Corel and they say they do not support OS/2 ! I don't support Corel.

I looked at the Panasonic site, no drivers :-(

I have searched on various Net search engines...no luck.

However I have had the drivers E-Mailed to me from the vendor.
It is called: optical.sys size: 16434, dated 22/2-93
There is a pan_pd.ddp file attached for installation.
>4) Also, some articles on the PowerDrive claim that Panasonic has OS/2
I have seen adverts claiming OS/2 support. The drivers must be from
the 2.1 days.

I got it ad US$ 750.- incl. 2 disks, a good deal I think. I am looking forward
to easy backups.
Thanks for the info.

I have been there, they don't seem to have what I am looking for :-(

I have not found drivers that will allow me to set up the CD-ROM part of
the drive. The PD part is installed and works fine.
Does anyone know how to get the CD-ROM part to work?
>http://www.toray.com. I don't have a PD drive. I have an Iomega Zipdrive and
Nothing usable there either...
Your welcome for the info.
Maybe you could post the PD OS/2 Drivers to hobbes (ftp-os2.cdrom.com).
The other people that I know sell PD drives, for those that may want this
technology are:
Plasmon
Fidelity International Technologies
Smart & Friendly
PSS Data Storage Solutions
However, all of these drives are relabeled Panasonics with different
types of external boxes or internal configurations.
The cheapest I have seen price wise has been:
$499 internal w/ 2 disks or 1 disk and controller
$649 external w/ 1 disk
later,
Jim
Now I am confused...has anyone actually gotten this drive to work
under os/2? I have the LF-1000 external one sitting at my feet gathering dust.

I have. It works just fine BUT only the PD part, not the CD-ROM
part. I can't find the/any drivers that will allow me to access
it's CD-ROM part.
I will try to get the driver onto the Net ASAP for those who want them.
Just remember that it will only allow you to use the optical part not
the CD-ROM. (I don't know how anyway)
I have managed to get both the PD and CD-ROM working under
both OS/2 and DOS. Unfortunately, the PD part only works as
a big FAT floppy. The PD drive must be jumpered so that it
uses SCSI logical unit numbers (LUN's). Mine came jumpered
that way when i bought it. The PD drive is LUN #0 and the
CD-ROM is LUN #1.
I use an Adaptec 1542CF. The drivers have options to enable
multiple LUN devices. You also need the driver optical.sys
from hobbes.
The relevant lines from my OS/2 config.sys are:
(My PD drive has SCSI id =5).
BASEDEV=AHA154X.ADD /V /ET /A:0 /!DM:5
BASEDEV=OS2SCSI.DMD
BASEDEV=OS2ASPI.DMD
DEVICE=c:\os2\boot\optical.sys
DEVICE=c:\os2\boot\cdrom.dmd
IFS=C:\os2\boot\cdfs.ifs /Q
and from my DOS config.sys:
DEVICEHIGH=d:\scsi\aspi4dos.sys /D /L
DEVICEHIGH=d:\scsi\aspdisk.sys /D
DEVICEHIGH=d:\scsi\aspicd.sys /D:ASPICD0 /ID=5 /L
I also tried using LOCKDRV.FLT and SYQLOCK.FLT with this drive.
These drivers either do not support media removability
or are incompatible with the DOS drivers. This is probably
because the driver reports itself as an optical device.
I couldn't get the HPOFS.IFS file system to work.
