I have downloaded all the appropriate drivers and configuration
utilities for OS/2 through DD Pak On-line.
Here's the scenario.
1. Install OS/2, using updated install diskettes 1 and 2. No Problem.
2. Update to Fixpack 15. No problem.
3. Install Thinkpad System Management Device Driver using DDInstall.
Shut down and reboot. No problem.
4. Install OS/2 Configuration utility. Shut down and reboot. Upon
rebooting, check version number, etc., as per instructions. No
problem.
5. Install PC Card support. Shut down, reboot, etc. No problem.
6. Install Crystal audio driver from audio features diskette.
-shut down and reboot
-upon rebooting, get the following message:
"the driver CWAUDIO.SYS specified in... did not load. Line 105 of the
Config.sys file is ignored"
followed by:
RM: IRQ 65535 (Resource Conflict)
OS/2 continues to load, without audio.
7. Install MWave Modem driver. Upon rebooting, get the same messages
as above, and also the following:
"the driver VHIO0437.SYS specified in... did not load" etc.
My efforts to resolve it so far:
-I have used the Thinkpad configuration utility to disable/reallocate
all manner of devices with which the Crystal driver and MWave dsp may
be in conflict.
-I have enabled full hardware detection, then checked in Hardware
Manager for any conflicts. I have also RMVIEW'd with no parameters,
for a full report, and with /IRQ and /DMA, and have pored over the
subsequent RMVIEW text files.
-The Result: my system does not even appear to recognize either the
sound card or the modem. There are no other devices using the disputed
IRQ's (5 for the sound card, 3 and 10 for the modem.) In RMVIEW and
SCANPCI, the devices do not even show up. Also, I can't find any
documentation in OS/2, or on the net, to help me understand what the
'65535' in the error message mentioned above refers to.
After countless reinstalls of OS/2, fixpack, and drivers, I am at a
loss. If anyone can help me get OS/2 to recognize these devices,
resolve any IRQ conflicts, and get sound and modem functionality out
of my Thinkpad, I would truly appreciate it.
TIA,
Jay
Anyway, thanks again. I still welcome any and all suggestions. I'd
like to have a fully functional OS/2 partition on this system.

Did you install Device Driver FP2?

That's probably a -1. This is typical generic, software return code that
says an operation failed or, possibly in this case, that no value was
assigned.
Sorry, I can't help more.

(Hoping someone who hasn't seen this thread may have a clue. To recap:
an IBM Thinkpad 770Z 9549-81U that has an IRQ resource conflict that
prevents the soundcard (CS4239)and modem (MWave DSP) from being
recognized. Tried correlating IRQs with Win98 partition using the
Thinkpad Config utility. Have tried stand-alone OS/2 installations.
Have tried using the Thinkpad Config utility in OS/2 to disable/enable
every possible combination of resources. Have enabled full hardware
detection and pored over RMView files ad nauseum looking for a clue.
Basically, Win9X/ME/XP configure the resources correctly, OS/2 and
DOS/Win31 don't. The BIOS doesn't have any facility for forcing IRQs.
I've read every word on the relevant IBM Web pages, and the manual and
supplement. No help.
Please read further up for full details if you might be able to help.
I've tried everything that has already been suggested, everything
mentioned above, and then some, all to no avail. TIA.)

I have a 770 but I don't think I can be much help as I do not have the
MWave modem. I use an external or a PC Card modem and have not run
into the problem you describe. If you disable the modem does the
soundcard work, or vice versa? I have not tried things like turning
off plug and play, but if that is possible it might be something to
try. You might also try turning on full hardware detection in OS/2 and
see if that helps. Can't say whether any of this will work, but these
are ideas I would try if I had that problem.

There were no desktop-style BIOS settings such as I'm accustomed to,
so I couldn't find any "PNP Operating System=(No, Yes)" setting.
Finally, last night, I came across a little icon in the BIOS called
"Initialize." Having tried everything else, I clicked on it. I went
immediately to a fresh install of Warp 4. When I got to the part of
the install where you choos CD-ROM, Multimedia, Printer, Display,
etc., it defaulted to 'Soundblaster Pro' in the Multimedia device
list. Previously, it had always showed 'None.' Having pored over the
Dr. Martinus Notebook/2 site, I knew this was a good sign. I reset it
to None, as he advises, then went ahead with the install.
After updating to FP 15, I went once again through the Thinkpad driver
installation process. After installing the sound drivers and
rebooting, voila!, no resource conflict. HOWEVER, there was no audio
either. System sounds are enabled, volume is 100%. I checked the
Hardware notebook, and sure enough, the Crystal chipset and its IRQ,
DMA and memory resources were correctly identified. I figured I'd come
back to it, and went ahead with the rest of the installation (video,
trackpoint, modem.) The modem worked fine, when I configured DOIP to
look for it on COM2. That is a major breakthrough.
As for the CS4239, now that the system recognizes it, I'm hopeful I
can eventually get sound to work. I've tried loading the CWAUDIO.SYS
and other drivers ahead of the COM drivers, since that was previously
recommended, but it didn't work. There's no need to
uninstall/reinstall MM support, since I already deselected SB PRO
during the main install.
Another odd thing: with the previous problem, Win-OS/2 would refuse to
start. Now, it starts, but it gives a warning that some other
application is using CWAUDIO.SYS. I don't know what that could be,
since I'm not getting system sounds in OS/2 or sound from any OS/2
applications.
Still, it's a step in the right direction. Now, I can get on the
Internet at least. I still haven't tried rebooting into my Win98
partition. That may reset all the hardware to the previous config.
Having to initialize the BIOS every time before booting into OS/2
would be a pain in the rear, but still better than no OS/2.
Thanks again for everyone who helped.

I have a 770X, which is identical, save for a funky hi-res screen. It's
been working fine since Day1, and through 1 clean install of MCP1.
I basically installed NO sound card driver during install, and added
everything afterwards, and it's pretty happy.
Check your config.sys to make sure all old references to soundblaster
have been removed.
