I have a 3com 3C905B-TX ethernet card, and it insists on using IRQ 10,
which clashes with my SCSI controller. ALT-F1 and then F5 to tell OS/2
to detect hardware doesn't have any effect. When I try to run the DOS
configuration program that comes with the card, I get an error message
complaining that the version of EMM386.EXE is prior to v4.49 and the
configuration program refuses to run. The BIOS just lets me choose
"legacy/ISA" or "PCI" for any given IRQ, which one wouldn't think is
much help because the SCSI card is PCI too.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I am using that card on my computer without trouble under OS/2. My
computer has Adaptec 7880 on-board chip plus an Adaptec 1542CF. The
on-board chip and the NIC are both PCI and seems to work well. The
BIOS correctly assigned IRQ 10 and 11 to NIC and PCI-SCSI cards. Look
at your BIOS configuration in the page where they state the IRQ
assigned to each PCI channel for conflicts. If you have tweaked the
assignements, go back to defaults.

Gook luck

PCI devices are supposed to share the same IRQ so don't worry about both
devices using the same IRQ.

Looks like you have an Award bios. What I did is to assign IRQ-11 to PCI and
set the remaining IRQs to legacy/isa.

Try booting DOS without any drivers or memory managers that may interfere
with the DOS setup program and download the latest ( version 4.01 ) 3c905BTX
utility/drivers from 3Com's web site.

Are you trying to run that config program while booted to OS/2? You might want
to boot a dos floppy, and then run it. That's worked for me well, here...

This is a hardware issue, not an OS/2 issue.

swap your cards around in the slots.

it just may not work in your setup, but very unlikely.

good luck.

I have been in your shoes before.

James,

Nate's idea might work, but a better way is to boot that OS/2
machine from a DOS disk with the 3C905 installed and run the 3COM
config program (don't have my driver disks handy but look for a
program named 3C905cfg.EXE in the root of the driver disk). Take the
card out of PnP mode and set the address/IRQ for what you want it to
be.

I do this with ALL my servers (NT, NW and OS/2): a lot less grief.
