folds I think the customers could sue the Serenity people for not forewarning
them. It looks like a toss up to me. :-(

version of eCS and an alias crawls out of the woodwork to
announce the death of Serenity in a Germen (sic) publication

Well, gosh, I guess it would magically stop working at the stroke
of midnight on the day the originating company shuts down. Just
like, say, my copy of WordStar-for-DOS probably will, Real Soon
Now -- as soon as somebody informs it that WordStar-the-Company
has been defunct for years. Likewise, my copy of DR/Novell DOS
is surely living on borrowed time. And my HP DeskJet 500 printer
with its obsolete Z80 processor. As for those old paper books in
my collection -- made some time in the mid-20th Century -- pretty
soon I expect the lettering to start falling off the pages, after
their authors/publishers peg out...
As with any product (except those from, maybe, M$), the lack of
regular injections of "newness" is rarely fatal. Lack of upgrade
to handle new formats (eg) can be. It depends, as ever, on what
you want the product to do.
FUDsters, OTOH, love the sound of panicky screaming and are never
happy unless the sky is about to fall on someone else's head.
