DOOM STARTUP FAILURE (freezes at startup timer)

I ran into the same problem. Do you have a SoundBlaster/SB compatible sound
card? Try running the Doom Setup program and change the Music to Adlib
and the Sound FX to PC Speaker, and then run Doom. I have a feeling it's the SB
drivers in Doom that screw up.

What that means is that you are trying to use an unsupported combination of
sound drivers.. Turn off sound and it will work find.. Or only use
sound blaster for both settings..
