OS/2 4.0 (Warp2) WishList Voting Sheet Mar/9/96
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
*** EXTENSION ***
Votes are still pouring in, so I'm accepting them for another two
weeks. March 23rd it is.
*** EXTENSION ***
Okay, here's the deal; go down the list, rating the importance of
each suggestion. Yeah, some of them are going to be silly/stupid/irritating.
Fine. I'll give you a way to deal with it. Here's the ranking system:
-2 == Do NOT put this in OS/2 4.0
-1 == I won't use this -- make it an option, defaulted to OFF
0 == I don't care one way or the other
1 == I would like this feature if it was there
2 == I DEMAND this be added to OS/2 4.0
Just for fun, because I can see it coming, I'm adding a special
ranking. Each voter (who can submit a maximum of ONE "ballot") can use one
"special" rank per section (General OS/WPS/PM/Dos, etc). The special ranks
are:
-5 == If this appears, OS/2 is doomed
5 == This is critical to OS/2's future
Anyway, when you go down the left side of the list, throw in whatever
number you feel is appropriate. Then mail your response to me
(ga...@netcore.ca), and I'll tally it all up.
Please, don't duplicate votes. If you find you made an error, okay,
e-mail me and I'll correct it. But please have the good sense to not use any
additional e-mail accounts you have to get more "ballots". I'm trying to get
a real idea what the whole OS/2 community wants.
I should note that a copy of this text is being uploaded to
hobbes.nmsu.edu, along with a copy of all e-mail submissions sent to me
(there were some longer/more in-depth descriptions in many mails), as
wishlist.zip
Results will be posted to the usual places as soon as I can tally it
all up, and then, finally, sent to IBM, hopefully to have SOME impact on
Merlin's release feature-set.
The WPS was not intended to do the functions you are having problems with,
simple soluion, use a file manager!
Why does Win 95 do this so fast? It's not really OO, so it doesn't have all those EA's
, icon info, locations etc. to move around. If it did, moveing half my Win 95 drive
from C: to E: would not have broken the links to every program on the desktop!!
Hmmmm... do you run any other win-os/2 applications that use winsock? If they are working, so should netscape.
My Netscape installed without modifications, I set up a settings folder for it as a standard, shared session, and it runs just fine (well i had it lock up a couple of times just as it was quiting a session.... ).
The following lines are in my config.sys:
RUN=C:\tcpip\bin\cntrl.exe
RUN=C:\tcpip\bin\vdosctl.exe
In the Dos_Device line in the win-os/2 settings folder for Netscape I have the line:
C:\TCPIP\BIN\VDOSTCP.SYS
In the autoexec.bat file called by the win-os/2 settings folder for Netscape, the appropriate path to the tcpip\dos\bin
directory is set (it needs this to find Winsock.dll), along with a Set ECT=c:\tcpip\dos\etc.
I don't even have a tcpcntl.exe file. Maybe its the same as the cntrl.exe file called in my config.sys
I hope there is a clue here to help you. Good luck,
Already have it - 'Seek and Scan files' in the productivity folder will
look for text inside files (among other things), and once you have found
all matching files, you can edit them, or specify a command or program
to be run on the files (delete, open word proc, etc).
>WPS
> -sequence option for icons in Work-Area folders to allow users to
For the start folder, if you specify a default view that represents the
files in order (details view, or icon view in flowed or non-flowed form)
then they are started in that order on startup. Asynchronously (ie it
doesn't wait for the first to finish before starting the next), but it
does start them in that order. I assume work area folders work the same,
but I haven't tried it.
> -include a more simple (fast) way to change icons
You can drop icon files (*.ico) straight from a folder onto the icon
setting area of the 'General' page of a settings notebook. What's more,
the icons files show up as thier contents to all views of that folder.
> -create an "icon" folder which supports drag & drop adding of icons,
> and is easily accessible from settings notebook General pages
I don't understand - jsut create a folder and copy lots of .ICO files
into it. If you want to change an icon, drag it from your folder into a
settings page. What more is wanted here?
> -ability to add in associations so batch files can use their own
Already there - just put 'extproc c:\myprogs\perl.exe' as the first line
of a text file, then fill the rest with perl language. If you call that
file 'whatever.CMD' then it will be run like a batchfile when you type
'whatever' at the command line, but the default command processor 'cmd.exe'
will pass it to perl for execution. That's only necessary for the
command line, too - you can just add a 'Perl' program object to the WPS if
you want, and associate it with all '*.perl' files. If you double click
on a .perl file, it will now call perl.exe with the filename as an
argument.
Put a '-q' in the parameters, and it won't ask if you if you're 'sure'
you want to quit, either...
Interesting opinion. Then, what precisely is the purpose of WPS? And how come
that OS/2 2.x is there for 3 (4?) years without an intended means of managing files
except dir, del, copy and xcopy? If I had known that it is that incomplete, maybe I
had switched to NT when it came out.
No, but they want their OS/2 Warp partition to be called "OS/2 Warp" on
the Boot Manager screen, and not "OS/2Warp"
Yes, but if you have too manay images, not only does it take a long time to
draw them, but it crashes your machine, too. Frankly, I don't know the
purpose of the Light Table.
How 'bout setting up an object that runs ATTRIB to make the file dropped on it
read-only, picking up 25 files and dropping 'em onto that?
With a bit of REXX programming, many other large-batch modifications can
be made to work with drag-n-drop. Not all, unfortunately.
Maybe what we need is for someone to write a generalized version of
this as a real WPS application...
That's fine, but often you don't *want* to set up an object or a
script or whatever. What you want to do is "with all these files, do
this" from the GUI.
Remember, a complete idiot (ok, 65% partial idiot), can see the
read-only tag, or the run iconized tag on a settings page, but
probably can't write a script to set it.
Possible solution? If you've selected multiple objects and try to
click the settings menu, it has submenus for "individual" and "group"
settings. All the things that don't make too much sense to do to
multiple objects are disabled.
For the last response: PMATTRIB
This is a drag and drop utility for setting attributes. No need to open
the settings notebook at all.
That said, I would like the option of setting all settings at once, or
tool(s) which would set various settings. I know there are some tools out
there I've not yet tried which do a number of things, such as set
associations, but I'm not clear yet on how well they work. :)
I like the light table object. I finally figured out that you
didn't have to actually put the picture files in the folder to
get a thumbnail, you could just create a light table reference
from the picture's object menu. This way, you could make a
light table folder to show what the images in another directory
were at a glance, and you could keep the images where you wanted
them to be.
For objects in Light Table folders, yes. It'll be nice to have the facility
I know this is a third party solution and not built-in, but PMView
creates thumbnails for bitmap graphic formats, and changes the default
icon for any graphic having a thumbnail made to a smaller version of
that icon, so that the regular icon view shows thumbnails.
I was very excited when I saw the Light Table feature, but then highly
disappointed when I saw how poorly it worked. I've never seen the
Light Table feature not crash... usually takes the whole system down
with it, and it's horribly slow even when it works. If IBM would fix
this and make it look as though it weren't hastily pasted on top of
the WPS, I might use it.
I wish there was a way to group objects on the desktop/in folders and
put text down by them for easy sorting and grouping!
Well, just have a light table folder handy on the desktop and open it.
Go to the icon of the file you want a thumbnail for.
Pop up its object menu and select 'create light table reference...'
When that dialog pops up, select the light table folder from the list
of open folders and press create.
This makes a thumbnail for the graphic without the graphic having to
actually be in a light table folder.
Even better, actually. *.* won't affect files with no extension, as there's
no "." in the filename.
Try it. *.* finds all files, even those with no extension. You're thinking
of Unix which does proper matching. The *.* is special cased; *.*.* will
find only those names with two periods in them.
tested:
attrib *.* ;listed all files, including those with no extension
copy *.* nul ;copied all files, including those with no extension
dir *.*.* ;displayed only those file names with exactly two periods
dir *. ;displayed only those file names with no period and no
extension.
Here(Warp with FP17 installed), I got the following results:
tested
attrib * ;listed all files
attrib *. ;listed only those files with no period and no extension
attrib *.* ;listed all files
attrib *.*. :returned file not found error
attrib *.*. * ;listed only those files with two or more periods
attrib *.*.*.* ;listed only those files with three or more periods
I regularily use just the single * when I want to affect every file in the
directory. Saves typing<g>.
Oops. Blast. I hate special cases!
