Unfortunately, the LAN board that I once used with this server is "broken"
yet I can't find the old files for yet another board I previously used.
Now, I cannot establish connectivity with a workstation without a working
LAN, though connecting the thing to Windows 9x is quite straightforward even
if one doesn't know the "password" which I do.
Hasn't anyone yet cooked up a way to read the drives from these old servers
directly to a Windows machine without having to raise the server? The
drives I have to search are SCSI and supported by Windows.
Aside from that, I could, probably, use a 3C905 board, of which I have
several lying about. However, I have no idea where I put the install disks
for that board, as I stopped using it when PCI boards became available.
Any help available here?
thanks!
It's probably going to be easier to get a working *.lan driver for a
common network adapter than anything else you're likely to manage to
do. What working adapters do you have handy?

To the best of my knowledge, nobody has even attempted to write a file
system driver for Windows that would do this, no.

I tried that link yesterday and was unsuccessful at getting a complete
download.
I've got a couple of PCI adapters that have no identifying features, and,
frankly, since I've not used 'em in years, I'm unlikely to find the
associated setup files.

In addition I have two or three ISA boards, and they'd be fast enough just
for this one download ... namely an ACCTON NE2000-look-alike, a very old DTK
NE1000 equivalent, and a few 3C501's, all of which were in working order
when stashed away. They're old, and only 10Mbps, but they'd be adequate
just for this task. If I'm going to resurrect this server, I suppose it
would make sense to copy the entire file set to a CD or two, or CF, or
something, as there are three drives that were on that server, each about
300 MB, which, by today's standards, would be teensy. The whole server
would fit on a CF that's too small to be practical in my camera.

Too bad ... I guess that's too much to have hoped for.

I'd go with the NE2000 clone first, as the drivers for that should
already be in sys:system. Just load ne2000.lan and see what happens.
Similarly, the NE1000 clone might work with ne1000.lan. The 3c501
you might have drivers for, but probably not. I don't recall those
being included in the 3.11 days.

What's happened to Netware support?

So do you actually have drivers for one of these two, then?

I had 3c509 cards here working fine in servers, but that was what, 10+
years ago? I might still have a drivers disk around somewhere for
those, but it'd take some major digging to find it.
> What's happened to Netware support?
It moved on from 3.11? That version is ancient, well over 10 years out
of any sort of support by anybody. We went to NW4.11 in 1996, NW5 in
1999/2000, and then on to NW6 and NW65.

I've ordered up one of those PCI cards that worked last time I used this
server. Frankly, it's a waste, but, as I'm in the midst of moving, I can't
find the box where the other three (the functional ones) of those cards are
packed, and it may take months for me to find it. The software I'm looking
for is to help me allocate space in my new digs.

Don't these also need a netware-specific driver? What I meant by "support"
was drivers provided by the hardware vendor to support the various OS'
including Netware.
Well, yes. As opposed to...?

We stopped buying clone parts for servers in 1992 or so. We started
buying servers from Compaq, continued on with HP when Compaq got
borged. They include NetWare drivers that work, and are kept up to
date with their new hardware.
So do the cheap Asian clone boards have NetWare support software? Probably
not. But do I care? Not really.

If anyone is still reading this thread, I am surprised that you all had
such a difficult time with this -- I have routinely found NW3.x DSK and
HAM drivers on the 'net, to this day, for a huge number of nics, hbas,
and whatnot -- if you can't find 'em, I have a large archive and it
would not be a problem to email whatever you need.
