We need to upgrade a server to 4.11 from 3.12 that will not be connected to
the rest
of the network for approx. 30 days. What is the best way to upgrade. Should
we install the software leaving it in bindery mode or should we setup the
NDS tree and attempt to merge the trees. Any other ideas.

Do you install Netware4.11 to the same machine? If the answer
is yes,
Then pls backup up all your datas with something like a Tape Device using
Migrate utility from a workstation first, then install a brand new
Netware4.11
to your machine, then restore all datas from the tape device to the new
server,
more details you can take a look in the most CNE guide...

Use the Across-the-wire migration method,

Hi Bruce,

Novell did a great trade show in Halifax last week called
"Networking98" ... If you can believe it they gave the marketers the
first hour and then the techs the rest of the day. What a super show
!

Anyway, One of the sessions was on the migration from 3.12 to 4.11
and 3.12 to 5.0

They said that as soon as the show had finished touring they would up
date the Canadian site with the docs from all the seminars.

In brief here is what I recall:

If you are doing a stand alone 3.12 to NDS migration (meaning NOT
within an existing NDS tree) then you must use a tool called RMT.

However, if you are pulling a 3.12 server up into an existing NDS tree
they have a fantastic migration wizard that does it very slickly (and
if that's not a word ... read: In a slick manner).

There was also a great lotus cam (or whatever the software is called)
step by step presentation on the wizard that was beautiful.
Contacting your local Novell rep with this info should get you the
answers you need.

Hope this helps.

Greetings --

Don't forget to run bindfix before you migrate.
