So here's the deal. Got a 300 baud Hayes modem, remember them? ...
and hooked it up via the 25-pin COM1 port to the most out-of-date
machine in the office, an IBM XT with 512K of RAM, a 20 Mb drive, one
1.2 Mb diskette drive, no graphic card, but running DOS 5.0. And the
funniest thing happened: when I sent ATDT commands to the modem via
PROCOMM and TELIX, the modem dialed, and the RD light flickered as the
autologon procedures occurred, but the data did not come up on the
screen. I was on-line, but I was blind.

I figured, bad serial line. I tried another one. Same effect.

I figured, bad modem. I plugged it into an XT running at 25 Mhz via the
9-pin serial port: no problem. And I tried a 2400 baud Zoom modem on the
XT. Same thing.

I figured, bad serial card. I took one out of another old XT. Now I
couldn't even get the modem on-line.

Of course, I can't find any documentation on the banana-boat-type
cards (drive controller and serial port) that are in the XT.

What in God's name could be causing me this angst? Is it an interrupt
conflict? Is it a DOS-level problem? Is it my lack of blood sacrifice to
Wotan this month?

For God's sake, help, anyone!
