Hi. I was wondering if anybody knew when Zortech (Symantec)
would be releasing their next version of the C++ compiler with
Windows 3.1 support? I don't know whether to stick with
ZTC 3.0 or jump to another compiler for Windows programming
since there are a few good competitive upgrade offers. If I
knew that Zortech 3.1 would be released in the near future,
I would of course love to just wait a little while for it.

The tech support folks keep saying on the BBS that they'll let people
know as soon as possible. Bullshit. Nobody is asking for a specific
launch date, just a rough estimate, i.e. "sometime around the start of
1993". I personally hope lots of people get fed up waiting for inform-
ation and jump ship.

For many months Semantec has refused to give a clue as to when
they will announce anything. On the Symantec BBS, though, there
was an announcement that Semantec has acquired the company that
makes the Multiscope debugger. This is after rumors that the ZDB
debugger was being phased out, so I'm assuming some version of
Multiscope will be part of the next release. Likely new features:

- Windows 3.1 support
- WINMEM32.DLL support (32-bit interface to 16-bit Windows)
- OS/2 2.0 support
- C++ parameterized types (templates)

Likely fix for their defective 3.0 release:

- debugger support for the DOSX 386 extender memory model
via Multiscope

Finally, you can get the Windows 3.1 library on the Symantec BBS,
if that helps at all. (But no docs.)

The author of the ZDB debugger "phased out" Symantec, the actual press
release follows:

-----
PRESS RELEASE

17 March 1992

Talks between Murray Communications Ltd and
Symantec Corporation Breakdown.

Following on from Symantec Corporation's takeover of Zortech Ltd in
August 1991 talks have been taking place between Murray
Communications Ltd, the authors of the Zortech Debugger, and
Symantec over the continued development of this product.

It is with regret that we have to announce that these talks have now
broken down and that Murray is to leave the Zortech/Symantec stable
to pursue other interests.

Symantec retain the right to continue to market the Zortech Debugger
but will not be in a position to provide any new versions of this
product. It is expected that a replacement for the Zortech Debugger
will be found for any future releases of the Zortech C++ package.

Murray Communications would like to take this opportunity to wish
Zortech and Symantec the best in their future endeavors.

Yes. I believe that is being worked on. The question that keeps going
through my mind is will it be able to handle large (multiple megabyte)
32-bit applications? It runs in real mode and will have to store lots
(multiple megabytes in some cases) of debug data.

You can get ZDB debugger support for 32-bit applications today by purchasing
the X-32VM DOS extender from FlashTek, Inc. This DOS extender is written
by the same author as the DOSX entender that Zortech/Symantec is shipping,
and has not only ZDB support, but virtual memory -- something DOSX will
never have (FlashTek, Inc. has exclusive rights to it).

For those people that like ZDB, a reincarnation will probably be available
from FlashTek in the near future and will work with other compilers. The
same is already true of Flash Graphics, and royalty free DOS extender
support for other compilers has already been announced for later this
year.

FlashTek, Inc. is a spinoff company founded by some of the Zortech team
members which Symantec declined to show interest in. FlashTek, Inc.
actually has more original developers from Zortech than Symantec does.

Joe,
Maybe you can answer a question. Do you know if Flashtek has a
version of DOSX that will work under OS/2 2.0's DPMI server ?
The prospect of using Zortech to devellop DOS-Windows-OS/2 apps
is an attractive one..
Thanks

Pierre

Yes. Order our X-32VM product and it comes with a fix that allows you
to run not only the applications you build with X-32, but the Zortech
compiler and linker under OS/2 2.0. However, there is still a glitch with
the debugger interface and 32-bit applications. The debugger interface
currently doesn't work under DPMI. Debugging DOSX/X-32 applications must
be done under some other host.

FlashTek is a company based in Idaho that is sort of a spinoff from the old Zortech crew. Joe Huffman, designer of Flash Graphics, is president. They sell
Flash Graphics for multiple compilers as well as a 32-bit DOS extender quite
similar to the one shipped with the Zortech compiler. The company I work for
writes GUI's for the DOS market and we use Flash Graphics more than any other package since it is smaller, faster, and all around better than anything else out there.
Of course this is just my humble opinion.

FlashTek, Inc. was founded in January '92 by a group of former Zortech
developers when Symantec refused to allow me to audit the books (as allowed
for in my contract) and numerous other contract violations.

Current product offerings from FlashTek, Inc. include:

Flash Graphics -- which has numerous new features, such as virtual screens,
more fonts, multiple simultaneous graphics adapters, and many
others. It also now supports Borland and Microsoft compilers
with more compilers to be supported in the near future.

X-32VM -- An improved version of DOSX, the 32-bit royalty-free DOS extender.
New features include debugger support (ZDB, as shipped with the
Zortech compiler), virtual memory, system(), spawn(), and exec().
Other compilers will be supported later this year.

Later this year we plan to support other compilers with an improved version
of what is now called ZDB, the Zortech debugger.
