I run only DOS programs under MS DOS Shell using MS DOS version 6.21. But
virtually everyone I communicate with nags me to switch to Windows.
Actually I'd like to make the switch so I could browse the web from time
to time.
But I resist making the change since it would require re-installing all
of my programs under Windows and learning how Windows works.
But I thought I saw a message here from a fellow who is running DOSSHELL
under Windows? Is that really possible? If so it would make the
transition to Windows as painless as possible, since I could continue
running my DOS applications under DOSSHELL and switch over to Windows
programs gradually.
So, if this is really possible, then where do I start?

I am not that fellow, however, for what it's worth, I've run DOSSHELL
under 3.1 and have experienced minor problems. I guess it depends on
what you run and there is a small performance "hit". For what it is
worth, I've also run DOSSHELL under '95 and NT's 3.5x and 4.0.
Obviously, certain programs will just not work under any Windows (what
comes to mind quickly is, for example, Norton Speedisk etc.; under NT,
programs that direct access hardware etc.).

You can browse the Web (text only & also graphics) in just DOS as
well. Here 's some names;
DosLynx
Nettamer
Minuet
Arachne (graphic)
SPIN
Knots
Sites;
Browsers: http://www.concentric.net/~Cruzing/dosinet/dosinet.shtml
PPP client: http://www.klos.com/

Win95 is for the brain dead, WHY - because they keep
on re-installing over and over thinking the crap will sort itself out,
and it won't..They are just point and click merchants or new converts
who don't know any better.. You will be left un-supported when they
drop it..

Hi, Will!
>I run only DOS programs under MS DOS Shell using MS DOS version 6.21. But
I'm glad to see that I am not alone with respect to using MS DOS. Like
you, I was able to adjust to DOS without having any hangups. Reluctantly,
I had to acquire Windows 3.1 since most of my associates were dishing out
files from Windows-based software such as Lotus, Word and XLS. Had it not
been for this inconvenience, I would have stayed with DOS. I feel more
productive manipulating the computer and running programs under DOS, more
so because I only have a 386. Windows, with its graphic interface slows
down execution speed of the software, that is why, people have gone crazy
about pentium and the higher speed computers.
>virtually everyone I communicate with nags me to switch to Windows.
Cheap memory has made a lot of computers obsolete, not because of the
computing ability of these machines, but because of the graphic interface
that has been promoted by the new software, notably Windows.
>Actually I'd like to make the switch so I could browse the web from time

I too would like to try browsing the web. I guess, I will have to go into
one of these cafes or better still ask a friend to use his account for a
while. Presently, I have been able to get some resources from the internet
using just an e-mail account with a local BBS. I have been downloading
material at a phase faster than I can find time to read them! So, I guess
this puts a limit on how much I can surf the net by e-mail.

If that's the only reason for switching to Windows then I think it is not
worth it. I am assuming of course that you would not be upgrading your
computer to be able to run the latest version of Windows with audio and
video capabilities.

>But I thought I saw a message here from a fellow who is running DOSSHELL

I do not run DOSSHELL. I am what you might call a "main-liner". What I
normally do when I have to run dos-based programs is to exit windows via
the MS DOS prompt. Then I type in the path to where I want to run a
program. Where I run a program regularly, I install a batch file at the
root directory and invoke it whenever I want to run the associated program,
and presto -- the program is running even without changing directories
manually. I believe that the fingers can type the commands faster than it
takes the whole hand to move the mouse and click at the proper icons.
>transition to Windows as painless as possible, since I could continue

This is possible, but sometimes, I experience some glitches. While running
Windows, I exit to MSDOS without terminating Windows and run, say, a
program in basic. Sometimes, the program does not run because of some
memory conflicts, so I have to reboot the computer and run the application
without loading Windows first.

>So, if this is really possible, then where do I start?
I suggest you take on a demonstration copy of the Windows version you might
want - that is, if such a thing exists. Otherwise, you might just "borrow"
the program and try it out for size. If you are satisfied, then buy it..
If not, then forget it and go to the cafe and try to surf there. There is
no abolute rule that you have to work and enjoy on the same computer...
