: I caught wind of of a MSDOS 6.22 with a compression utility called
: "DriveSpace" any truth to this? When is it going to stop?
I fetched a copy of 6.22 on a BBS last night. Its true, theres a
replacement for Doublespace called Drivespace. I installed in on my 486/33
at work during the morning break and de-installed it at lunch. It really
slowed down my disk access, notably in MS Excel 5.0. I kept 6.22 loaded,
just got rid of the Drivespace prg. I don't see any difference in the new
6.22 as yet though. Time will tell.

It's true. It won't.

Yes, Microsoft will release MS-DOS 6.22 in July. It contain a new
(probebly written by Vertisoft) on-the-fly disk-compression utility
called 'DriveSpace'. I've already worked with the beta-version: The
utility is direct comparable with DoubleSpace, but it's called
'DriveSpace': DriveSpace.bin is back in the root.
I've notice no differance compared to DOS 6.2 and 6.21....

PS. Microsoft has planned to release MS-DOS 7.0 before the end of this
year. It contains a complete 32-bits kernel, so it would run in XMS,
what means that your old 16-bits DOS-applications can run in a lot more
convential-memory....

From what I have read, DriveSpace is supposed to be backward compatible with
DoubleSpace. However I have heard there are some problems with utility programs
that interact with these type of compression programs.
The example I read about was Norton's SpeedDisk not being able to open the
compressed root drive.
Caveat emptor.

You probably mean "so it would run in extended memory". XMS makes
extended memory available to programs. Perhaps this alleged 32-bit
kernel *provides* XMS, but I doubt it *runs in* it.
Will DOS 7 contain compatibility w/ Doublespace? Since there are still
probably thousands (or more) people who Still use Dos 6.0, 6.2 with
Doublespace...(Myself included) :)
