My brothers friend said installing msdos 6.22 over a previous installation
of msdos 6.2 would make the installation of msWindows on the machine
unusable. I can't see it happening that way, but just to clarify things.
Does anyone out there know of this kind of problem upgrading from 6.2 to
6.22?
Thanx in advance for any help in this regard. Much appreciated.

MS-DOS 6.22 is as same as MS-DOS 6.2 except changed from Double Space
to Drive Space...Well, it doesn't matter!!!

The only problem may occur if your MS-DOS 6.2 is NOT fully installed,
then, MS-DOS 6.22 will NOT fully upgrade successfully.

Upgrading from MS-DOS 6.20 to MS-DOS 6.22 will have absolutely no
affect on the Microsoft Windows 3.11 or earlier that is installed on
the system.

Here's a boilerplate I use on Compuserve about upgrading MS-DOS 6.20
to 6.22:

======cut here=====

Upgrading to MS-DOS 6.22 from MS-DOS 6.0, 6.2, or 6.21 allows users to
convert DoubleSpace drives to DriveSpace. DriveSpace contains disk
compression algorithms written entirely by Microsoft. MS-DOS 6.0 and
6.2 DoubleSpace users will see that DriveSpace is comparable to
DoubleSpace performance and capacities. The DoubleSpace user
interface look and feel has been retained with DriveSpace. As far as
users are concerned, the only significant difference is the name.

MS-DOS 6.22 also adds new and enhanced foreign language character
support for the following countries:

Canada Brazil Bulgaria Greece Iceland
Macedonia and Serbia/Montenegro Rumania Russian
Turkey

The MS-DOS 6.22 version of EMM386.EXE corrects some compatibility
issues with PCI boards. This version of EMM386.EXE can be downloaded
from the Microsoft Software Library. It is compatible with MS-DOS
6.0, 6.2, and 6.21.

The MS-DOS 6.22 version of MSD recognizes a Pentium microprocessor.
This version of MSD is also compatible with earlier MS-DOS 6 versions
and is included in the EMM622.EXE download file mentioned above.

The MS-DOS 6.22 version of SMARTDRV.EXE was fixed to work with Kodak
photo CD's. SMARTDRV.EXE is not available for separate download.

The MS-DOS 6.22 version of SCANDISK.EXE fixes an obscure and rare
problem associated with running SCANDISK on a Connor disk drive with
VERIFY=ON in AUTOEXEC.BAT. SCANDISK.EXE is not available for separate
download.

Otherwise, MS-DOS 6.22 is identical to MS-DOS 6.20, which was a
significant upgrade of MS-DOS 6.00.

There is an article available in the Microsoft KnowledgeBase that has
further information. To access the article, use "GO MICROSOFT",
select the MSKB, and quick search on the article ID: listed below.

Article Title: Why Should I Install MS-DOS 6.22? ID: Q105831

You can obtain the MS-DOS 6.22 STEPUP.EXE file from some U.S. software
stores for under US$10, and from from the following on-line sources
for the cost of downloading at 2.5+ megabyte file.

FTP - ftp://ftp.microsoft.com/softlib/mslfiles/
WWW - http://www.microsoft.com/support/

The MSKB is on the Microsoft Web Site also.

I imagine it must be possible to screw this up, but I can't imagine how.

The 386DX40 I am using now runs Windows 3.11 very nicely on top of MS-DOS
6.22, 6.20, 6.00, 5.00, and 4.01, where one gets the other versions of
MS-DOS, kept on other paths, by using the appropriate boot floppy. MS-DOS
6.20 is the default that you get when you boot from the hard disk.

Remember, Windows 3.10 or 3.11 is just another DOS application, complete
with /? help.

The sizes of the various modules that one loads high differ very little
within 6.22, 6.20, and 6.00, ie, the loads are almost identical.

MS-DOS 5.00 has no memmaker, and no provision for overtly specifying which
UMB to LH into, and no means to discover the maximum expanded size of each
module when loading, so it is harder to get a good high load.

In order to use MS-DOS 4.01, you must use the HIMEM.SYS provided with
Windows. The HIMEM.SYS, SMARTDRV.SYS, RAMDRIVE.SYS, and EMM386.SYS
provided with MS-DOS 4.01 are essentially useless by today's standards.
This means you are running Windows on top of a DOS where all the drivers
are loaded low, but Windows copes all right.

The differences between 6.20 and 6.22 are very minor. Why are you
upgrading? What feature provided by MS-DOS 6.22 is lacking from 6.20?
I found the differences between 6.00 and 6.20 to be significant, that is,
with the applications I use, 620 crashes MUCH less often.
