Well, neither did I. But, I made one anyway.
Seriously. I finally came across a .WAV/.AU file player for Dos. It
played most of .WAVs I tried, even some 16 bit ones. Best of all, it
just plays the sound, it has no display output. Well, just a flashing
text cursor in the top left-hand corner of the screen, but that's Dos
waiting for the program to end.
Oh yeah, it's called PLANY.EXE and I made a DVP for it to play a
particular .WAV file (FANFARE.WAV). Then, I used DVPEDIT to make it
start up in the background. Finally, I added it to my Desqview startup
script and, voila, a cool startup sound for Desqview.
When I get sick of that sound, I just have to edit the DVP and change
the name of the .WAV file on the parameters line.
This just reinforces my belief that (almost) anything that can be done
in Windoze can be done in Dos. I just have to be patient enough for it
to be developed.

Hey it works! Thanks!

ş 10023.71 ş Take my advice, I don't use it anyway.
Perhaps you can help me (and any others who may be interested) in
obtaining a background music player.
That is, a .MOD (or even .ROL or .VOC) player that preferably has no
display output, just the sound. Like PLANY.EXE does for .WAVs. That way
I could set up a tune list and have background music while in Desqview.
I tried to get WOWII to do what I want and it sure doesn't like being
switched away from. ModEdit and DV don't get along either.
Also, I am thinking of making a Desqview desktop background (like
Windoze). It would basically work the same way I made a startup sound
with PLANY.EXE. Run the file viewer in the background with the picture
name as a parameter. Of course, the picture would have to be 640 x 480
in 16 colors. Furthermore, it would have to use the same palette. At
least that way it won't scrunch up or change colours drastically when
the Desqview menu comes up. Warning: With a background, Desqview will
always want to be in graphics mode. But, that's okay with me.
Do you happen to know of a good file viewer for this purpose? One that
accepts picture filenames as a parameter on the command line? Does it
use a minimal amount of memory/resources and doesn't do too much
polling? I can work with .GIF or .PCX for this mini-project, so either
or both is fine.
Better yet, does anybody know where I can get good info on how to make
my own little assembly language program to read a 640 x 480 x 16
.RAW/.PCX/.GIF file and display it on the screen?
TIA

You might want to check out DV/X. It's a bit more graphic friendly.

It's also much more memory hungry in the first 1024k of RAM. You might
find the maximum size of each session smaller than plain DV386.

True but if multimedia whistles and bells are the gaol, DV/X would fit
the bill just fine. BTE, I have copies of DV/X v1 and v2 and DV v2.8
here if someone needs help.

My emailer can do attached files. What's this about DESQview 2.8?

Several years ago, QuarterDeck (Bob Sobel) sent me a free copy of DV386
v2.8. Seeing that qDesk is no more and Symentec isn't interested in
Desqview, I figured the few of us left need to stick together. If you
need a copy let me know here..
I'm looking for DV/X v2.1. THe last version of DV/X. If anyone know
were to find it, please let me know.
... DOS for dummies? Isn't that what Windows is?

could you please send me a copy of DV 2.8 and DVx 2.0 ?
I have been looking for them for a long time...
many thanks.
AA> Mine does - I would be *very* interested in dvx 2 and dv 2.8.
OK Andrew, DV/X is about 10megs. I have DV split from QEMM v8.0 and is
under a meg. Can your eMail account handle file attaches that big?

Sure. Can your eMail account handle a 10 meg attachment?
> Sure. Can your eMail account handle a 10 meg attachment?
hmmm.. that could be a problem for DVX since it's 10meg.
but I think it's ok for DV 2.8... could you please mail
dv 2.8 first ?
or do u think it's possible to put DVX in a public ftp
stie so that people who are interested can download it
by themselves ? of course, even they do so, they are still
thankful to you generosity.
if it's ok, how about ftp://ftp.paco.odessa.ua/pub/msdos/multitask/ ?
since the site holds many DV programs (DV2.6, DV companions, api debugger,
panel designer...). I think the system maintainer of that site will be
pleased to see some nice guy upload DVX.
really appreciate for your reply
OK, I think I got both of them through to your eMail. Could you please
pass them on to the next guy asking for them?

Funny you should ask... It's a Hotpop.com thingy, and, well, err, as a
matter of fact, it does, up to only about 1/2 meg or so, I think. :)
If someone could come up with a private ftp site, I'll certainly place
the DV/X v2.0 archive on it for all to get. I don't have access to my
own ftp site.
