Bummer. There's been no public mention of DVX v2.0 (there has been some
talk about the DVX "next release" that was shown at COMDEX, but NO talk
about versions numbers). That means that some poor sole, went and told
person PRIVATELY to sit tight. We do this sometimes and can get in very
big trouble for discussing unreleased software. It's a big NO-NO. Now
the screws will be tightened, and anyone that actively posts to the net
will be under scrutiny for leaking company secrets and those who think
that dealing with the .desqview newsgroup is a waste of company time,
will have one more reason to shut it down and not allow company time for
the purpose.
When a formal release of the information on release 2.0 comes out, then
we can talk about it openly. Until then, all that has happened is that
we all have learned that it will be version 2.0 and made sure that noone
will learn anything else until the press release comes out.
Bummer.

Just received in the mail today a "Quarterdeck Product Update" from Ron Brown
and Brenda Cheatham of the Gov't and Edu. Sales dept. It looks like
a typical mass mailing. With my typos and reformatting it says:
---- cut here ----
DESQview/X
We are expecting an upgrade to version 2.0 of this extremely powerful
multitasking, X client server / display server. Available in March, this
upgrade will increase the X server speed, increase the speed of MS Windows,
provide support for a much wider range of Video Adapters, and provide support
for Berkeley Printer Protocol. In addition, the network manager for TCP/ip
and the TCP/ip kernel will now be included.

>Did they give any ideas of what would be included in the next version?
No :-( Perhaps if QOS is monitoring this newsgroup one of them would
like to post something up?
>What were your requirements?
Among others:
1) Runs on DRDOS 6 (and Novell DOS 7 when I get my hands on it)
2) Complained that after loading PCNFS I didn't have much UMBs left
Asked if DVX could be loaded into protected memory using NVDOS 7's
DPMS function. (Not without a complete rewrite - he sez. On the
other hand he didn't say DVX 2.0 wasn't a complete rewrite - so
here's hoping)
3) Said that most reviews commented on the (lack of) speed compared
with other X/Window systems.
4) Asked for X11R5 support. Got non-commital response.
5) There is no 5.
There must be quite a few people who are in half a mind to go completely
over to OS/2 or Windows 4/NT which means no coming back due to the fact
the entire system changes, BUT if they were to hear just rumours about
DV/X 2.0 or similar they would sit tight for just a few more months.

We've argued this to the powers above with very little success. We've
pointed out that Microsoft products get REVIEWED before they are even
in widespread beta. We've argued the value of informing our customer
for just the reasons you site and a few self-centered, foolish ones.
How do you think we feel about on-going questions about new product and
have to keep going "Duhhhhhh, nope. Do'nt know nuttin'" until the product
was released. It's the kind of a stupid feeling. We WANT to tell you.
If you recieved the info from in...@qdeck.com, then this was an official
source, but they are not supposed to be talking about it either. Someone
either did something stupid, or went out on a limb.
In a round about way, I have been talking about every portion that has been
shown publically or mentioned in public release from the company. I have
been pushing for a press release (internally) for some time. There are
some things that people have been asking for that will be in there, but
they haven't been shown at a trade show or mentioned in minutes at the
shareholder's meeting or in ANY public correspondence. If we showed it
at a trade show in Equador, in a booth with only one computer, where
nobody attended; then I would consider it available for public mention
in the new group. Otherwise, I'm risking my job.
If you think it feels stupid to have to "Duhhhh, I don't know"; imagine
what it would feel like to loose my job and have to look at my family
and say "Food? I dunno..." because I tried to help someone. Some of us
will continue to try to help peope, because we believe that THAT is the
business we are in. This in no way is an admittance of guilt with reference
to the Contract of Confidentiality that I signed on my employment ;)
Sorry about the bandwidth. I hope to have a press release in my hand
this week or next. Oooops? I wonder if I can talk about WHEN I can
talk, instead of what I can talk about...
Who does it hurt to tell us about new stuff coming out?
1) Current sales: Well, I may wait, but I may just get the current one
to start the learning curve. If qdeck said 3-month window (purch in the 3
mos before releasee get free up[grade) then there would be no sales problem..
2) Compettion: WEll, though there are other xwindows produicts, and
other multitaskskers, I thinkk the directions for most are pretty obvious.
Faster, more options, etc. So, announcing new options is not really that
much of a surprise to the market. However, Dv's procducts are uniques ihn
that they are dos multitaksers/memory mangers as well as x windows rmote
terms. This means that they a) have compet on two fronts or more likely
b) have a unique position. So, this info would not be giving away info,
but would instaed create demind for the newest version to fit my unique needs.
3) False hopes: WEll, that is the market. If you can't deliver, then
maybe you should not announce it. But if you make a public commitment,
then maybe (acrrocing to social psychology) you should be more likely to
attmept to actually complete the project...
Am I wrong in any of this? I am not mad, I am just confused. What would
be a good reason not to let us know about this stuff?
Just curious...

You are absolutely correct in all of this. We use these arguements
every time the issue comes up. The biggest responses are largely based
on your Number 3 and the fact that we are a publically held corporation.
If we did fail to deliver on something that was discussed, we could be
accused of attempting to falsely inflate the price of our stock or any
investment deal that might be going on in the background.
Not being an administrator, I REALLY agree to the last part of Number 3.
I would love to have a "written contract" for some of the features to
make SURE they didn't get postponed to another release.

I'm not sure about the palette problem with WP 6.0, I know that WP6.0
has been a topic of discussion internally, but...
I did find out that something that hasn't been shown anywhere BUT WAS
put on a sales "talk about" sheet, is that DVX 2.0 will have support
for VESA video modes. I have eluded to this on a coule of occaisions
but couldn't come out and say "next release". If your video BIOS
has VESA vide modes (check Manifest; the Adapters/Video screen) and
I think it might require VESA version 1.01 or higher, I'm not sure
on that part. But some nice modes will be available to those with the
video memory and monitor to run them.

OK, at the risk of doing precisely what I ought not to do, could
someone, anyone, speculate on a quantitative definition of "nice
modes"? Specifically, would the probability of something higher
than 1024x768 be significantly higher than zero?
Disclaimer: I beleive the QDeck support staff presence on the

everything with a pinch of salt. I'm buying DV/X 2.0 regardless

Without making any claims that could consitute a verbal feature

Modes up to 1280x1024 and 256 colors may be available.

I think that the limits on most of the hires cards to be
supported (in DVX 2.0) are
1280x1024 in 16 Colors
and
1024x768 in 256 Colors.
That is if I remember correctly.

I agree. I was almost about to commit to X/Vision+Windows for work
despite being a dedicated DV user when QOS came back to me with the
"DV/X 2.0" recommendation. By the way QOS at that time did not
indicate that this was embargoed information so I posted the
original message which started all this off. If I had inadvertently
stepped on somebody's toes I apologise.
First of all I wish to apologise to QOS for inadvertently leaking
out information about DV/X 2.0 and specifically to <namewitheld> who
originally informed me about this. I am normally more careful about
this. However in my defence I would like to point out that:
1) There was no indication in the original e-mail that this was
embargoed information.
2) It said that DV/X 2.0 would be out in "a month or two". I waited
one and a half months before posting this enquiry to this news
group (OK so I should have waited a little longer :-( ).
Again deepest apologies {grovel} {grovel} {grovel}.
Then the mistake was actually with the person who gave you the info,
I apologize for my fast-draw on the response.

Yeah, the earthquake (and a couple of organization changes and such)
has set us back a bit.

simple, like a tumor :-) )
While I can't promise that it will be there when it ships, it is there

I have just upgraded to WP 6.0a and DV386 2.62 and I have found the

palette problem gone. I'm not sure if it's the WP or the DV upgrade
(from 2.61) as I did both at the same time. The readme with the
2.62 patch said something about better support for "direct bit
twiddlers" and DACs, so Bill, I guess this is official...

I ported NCSA's httpd version 0.4 to DESQview/X. If this is what
you are looking for get the sources via ftp at

Well, I wish I could agree, but I have 6.0_b_ for dos, and 2.62, and I
still have the pallette problem. Either it is a problme with the ATI card
that I use (not surprising) or something with the settings I have for wp.
If you could let me know your settings, or compare them to mine below, I
woudl appreciate it...
BTW: I have tried every combination of settings to get this to work
right, so changing things like Virt Graphics is not helpful; I want it to
virtualize. OF course it works without VG, but that defaeats the purpose...
The dvstart macro forces the program to use a differetn parameter file
(different colors so that the pallette looks normal) and to use regular
vga modes, not any of the extendeds....
Thanks for your help...

I guess they are sensitive ever since the five-year (well maybe it was
just three-year) gestation period for the initial release. Qdeck
sponsored several years of a developer's conference and the product
was still not on the shelves. By the way, I use DV/X all day, every
day, and wouldn't be without it in the mixed
UNIX/Mainframe/MSDOS/Windows/X world in which I work.
I believe that the solution is to set Virtualization to N and Runs in
Background to blank. If this is a graphics program, and is a protected
mode application, it cannot be virtualized. If it is a DAC twiddler,
and you want the DAC saved and restored, I think you need to set the window to
be non-virtualized.
