Using amdk6upd.exe on a AMD K6-2 450 mhz - chicken or egg?

Ok, I just get a k6-2 450 mhz and proceed to try to install win 95 osr
2 on it. After copying all the files, the setup program reboots and
prepares to run windows for the first time. Then I get some sort of
IOS error. I remember some sort of message about this on the boot
disk I was using, so I go to the microsoft web site and discover
amdk6upd.exe, which will supposedly cure my problems. Well, this
appears to be a windows program, so how can I run a win program before
I install windows? Am I missing something? Am I just supposed to
keep trying to install, and hope it makes it through once, so I can
run the fix? How about dropping my clock speed to 333mhz or less in
the bios?

Thanks for any help you can give me.

That should work.

Yup.. set the board to 33MHz or less, load windows, usbsupp and other
patches, then load the k6 patch last, reset to 450MHz and you're away.

U can also boot to safe mode to load the patch, if you're upgrading an
existing system to a faster chip.

Just set the mainboard to 300MHz and get the newest patch from
www.amd.com (Microsoft often has older versions). Install it and set the
speed back to 450.
That's all!

Walter,

As you can see there is more than one way of installing the patch. I've
done it
several times. I leave my cpu speed at 400Mhz. I just boot up.... hit
F8....
go into Safe Mode and go to the desktop. From there you can install the
patch from a floppy or from the hard drive. Then just reboot and you are
home free......
Good luck... Ray

I jumpered the board down to 300 mhz, installed the os and the patch,
and increased the speed back to 450mhz. Seems to be fine, no boot
failures.

Thanks to everbody for their help!

I tried this way several times, but often got the same error as if I
used normal mode...
Only jumpering down the speed to 300MHz made it sure.

The link on the AMD website POINTS TO the microsoft site. Microsoft don't
mention any version numbers, updates or improvements to the patch. Care to
explain about the "multiple versions" you claim exist?

Previously AMD had an older/incorrect version on their webpage. I
guess they must had realized it after a while and decided it was safer
to just point back to Microsoft.
The incorrect version has an older version of NTKERN.???(I think
VXD) and there is no way you can tell the difference except with a
binary comparison as the file sizes are identical. The older version
will cause your system to remain problematic due to the speed of the
K6 cpu.
I have both versions of the patch on my system somewhere I think :P

Oh God. Thanks for telling me - now I know. I received a patch from my
vendor (and downloaded it myself) which partially solved the 350 problem
but I have spent months battling with a system which the vendor says is
not faulty.

Having tried everything I could possibly think of I downloaded the patch
again and the system seems ok. I was wondering why it had suddenly
sorted itself out.
