Hosts.dat is a text file that you can create to control browsing from your
computer. The .sam is a sample file that shows you what it would look like
(open it with a text editor such as notepad).
One virus sends the contents of hosts.dat home:

The working version of the file (in W98 et al) is just called "hosts"
with no file type appended. The sam version is a sample
I don't remember, but the filename is usually Hosts (with no extension).
Another file, Hosts.sam explains its use.
