At any rate, before they got their hands on the computer and changed
many settings, I had been able to double click on a .wav file and have
it play automatically using the sound recorder included with Win95.
Somehow they deleted that association... I have restored the association
but now I have to make the sound recorder play by clicking on the Play
buttom.
Does anyone know how to get sndrec32.exe to play automatically when
files with a .wav extension are selected? If not, is there a way to
get the media player to start upon a double click?

Thanks for a good suggestion ... first I would like to try to enable the
autoplay without doing a reinstallation but if all else fails, I guess I
can try that.
Why does MS make these things so hard? Seems like there should be a
menu option to do this ... or does it take a hack to the Registry?
Maybe I am missing the obvious solution.
Anyone?

Yes, you need to make the Play operation the default for opening that
particular file. To do this open any explorer or folder window. Click
on View | Folder Options..., then go to the Tab that says File Types.
Look for the File Type "Wave Sound." Double Click on it. There should
be a list of Actions: Open, Play, Record. If one of these is missing
then you'll need to create them. Really all you need is Play, so I'll
go ahead and tell you how to do that. Click on New..., then in the
Action field type Play. Next, in the "Application used to perform
action" field type c:\windows\sndrec32.exe (or any other path that goes
to Sound Recorder). In that same field following the command add the
parameter /play, which will automatically play the sound on opening.
Optionally, you can add the parameter /close if you want the sound to
close after it is finished playing. Hit Ok. Then Click on Play and
press the button that says Set Default. Then press Close. That's it.
It should automatically play whenever you open a Wave File.

Brandon,
Works like a charm! thank you very much ... and I learned yet another
new thing about trying to control Win95 :-)
