There are some utilities by Microsoft to format/read/write DMF format
disks - which are the 1.7 MB disks you mention. The physical disks are
normal 1.44 MB floppies.

I thought the DMF format works only with Windows 3.1x. See
the .txt or .hlp files. But you can try format17.

Download a copy of FDFORM18.ZIP from your favorite Simtel type FTP
site.
I know that it is available at
in the directory named
/systems/ibmpc/msdos/simtel/diskutil/
The executable DOS based FDFORMAT.EXE that is extracted is only about
15k in size. Put it in a directory in your path -- c:\dos or
c:\windows\command, for example.
From the DOS command prompt, use the following parameters to format a
DFM disk.
fdformat X: /t:80 /n:21 /c:4 /d:16 /m:240
where ``X'' is your floppy drive.
The documentation will explain the meanings of all the parameters. (The
program was released 7-22-91 so Microsoft did nothing magical.)

It has been my experience that I need to first format a new disk to
1.44 Mb using either DOS format or the 1.44 Mb option in WinImage.
After that the disks format perfectly to 1.7 Mb.
I have always found that trying to format a "virgin" disk to 1.7 Mb
using WinImage results in the sector 0 error described above.

John, I assume what you wrote is in a 16-bit Chinese character set.
On my screen all I can see is gibberish - lots of special characters
from a European font.
If you don't see a problem your end, then you need to know this, so
that you can select a single-character mode when writing to western
news groups!

Hi, what I said about the WinImage is:
The disk you need for WinImage to format, to become 1.72MB, is
merely the normal 3.5" one. But if you want to use such function,
you must load, before Windows, the TSR FdRead, a shareware from
Christoph H. Hochstatter, which you can get with the FdFormat utility.
You don't need TSR FdRead if you just want to do a normal
1.44MB fromat.
As to the software from Microsoft, it can be downloaded from
the Microsoft BBS/WebSite. Sorry, I don't have the address handy.
It seems to me the Microsoft software is different from WinImage.
By the way, I am actually a little confused. I reach your article
from a newgroup ,on a news server in Taiwan, in which most of the
articles are Chinese. That is why I posted my article in Chinese
rather than in English. But it seems to me that you read my article
from a Western newsgroup. (I noticed that you are from U.K.)
Do you know why?
On CompuServe:

Software Library Files GO MSL
Hope this helps!

Because John, the original poster in his infinite wisdom cross-posted
to no less than 9 different news groups. I didn't realise (who looks
at headers normally?) until your second post.
A word of warning:-
The Fdread TSR you mention works by modifying the diskette parameter
table in memory, to allow more sectors per track than normal. I think
it's a very bad idea to load a real mode TSR to do this when Win95 is
replacing the block device drivers for disk access with protected mode
ones. Using FDread and a beta version of Win95, I managed to
completely corrupt handling of the floppy disk, and, although I didn't
lose any data, I still regard it as pretty risky.

Unfortunately, it doesn't. MS's web pages and FTP site are both very

Why stop at 1.7 MB? There's a program out now for DOS and OS/2 that lets
you format to 1.88 MB.

Is there a ftp site or www site that I could download it from?

I have the same problems with Win Image 2.20 and the Beta 2.3 version
both running on Win95. I have a Zeos 486 with the standard floppy
drives. I've also tried to run the Win3.1x version as well as a couple of
DOS programs as well (all from in Win95) - I've tried them with and without
fdread.exe installed as device, run from autoexec.bat, and run from the
command line -> all to no avail!
I'd really like to get WinImage working because it looks like a really
nice piece of software - so an help would be appreciated!!!
Please post any relevant follow-ups so that everyone can benefit from the
info!

Here, try this. Just unzip into its own dir. and go to shut down
and select to dos. This program MUST!! run in dos to work.
once your in dos go to the dir you put it in, & just run Msoft17a.bat,
you will get 3 prompts and it will start to format.
I use it all the time.

well perhaps it's because of win95???
I've tried the 2mf.exe or so and it worked FINE in dos 7.0 but as soon as
win95 is running, it JUST WON'T work anymore!

I think you are on to something - I tried every program I could
find (about 6 or 7 of them) to run on Win95. I finally tried CopyQM in
DOS 7.0 (re-booting my machine into DOS) - worked great!!
The only other explanation I can come up with is that there's a problem
with my old BIOS (from August 1993). Copy QM had an option for BIOS
control or hardware control - I used hardware (haven't tried the other
way). Perhaps all the other programs are using BIOS services which work
in a newer BIOS. I got e-mail from someone who used Win Image 2.20 on
Win95 successfully - he even sent me his .zip file, which indeed did NOT
work on my computer.
eventually we will all figure it out...

Any statements herein are my own opinion and not that of my employer.
I don't recall the site. I used Netscape, then connected to
an Archie server and searched for 2mf. It's not very big and a
quick download.
I am using WinImage and have yet to successfully format a disk
to more that what it is supposed to have on it (i.e. 720 or 1.44).
What am I doing wrong?

I found that I had to format floppies to their normal capacity first
(using the "vanilla" Win95 format), and then format to DMF format
(2048) using WinImage.

Try using a shareware called FORMAT17 to format the diskette for DMF format
use. If duplication of a DMF diskette is required better to use another
shareware called DCF494. Latest version of this duplicating software supports
the format which Microsoft now releases its softwares on diskettes.. Both
these softwares should be readily availble from many public BBS.

Dan,
Try a program called SH-CopyStar. This is one of the best, all
around, disk copying/formatting programs that I have found. You can
find the program via CompuServe and even register it using SWREG, if
you have an account with CServ. If not, try their web page at
http://members.aol.com/frankhorn/index.htm. The latest version is
4.??. I am currently using version 3.?? without any problems under
W95.

Can someone enlighten me on this DMF format. I know that MS is distributing it's software
on 1.7 mb diskette. Is this kind of format reliable? If it is, then why Maxell sells 1.44 diskette, when
it can actually label them as 1.7mb.

Les
