I have recently reloaded WIndows 95 on my computer and no longer have access
to the "256 color" setting in the Display Properties. I only have monochrome
and 16 color. How can I fix this problem?
Any advice is appreciated.

Gooday Andy,

often if windows can't detect your actual display adapter and monitor it
installs basic generic models which at least 'work'.

There are a number of approaches that I am aware of. Perhaps the simplest
is to right-click on your desktop, select properties => Advanced Properties
and check that the correct drivers for your adapter and monitor are
installed; or at least compatible ones

HTH
regards
Matt.

Try Reloading the drivers for the display adapter. You may be able to find
a updated driver for Windows 95 at a manufactures website or on the Windows
95 Rev B. CD.

Good luck,
Maurice.

You are using the standard VGA drivers for monitors. Try using Super VGA
drivers, or better yet, find drivers for your monitor at your manufacturer's
web site.

Ok here is the way to change back from 16 colors to 256 colors.

You need to reset your video display. Go into START, Settings, Control

panel. While in control panel double click the Display (icon of the

monitor). When ever you change the display driver you first have to

set it to 16 colors.(Dont ask me why thats what the tech. support told
me to do and it works.) You first have to set it up for 16 colors.
This will get you into Display Properties, When in this screen hit
settings, then click change Display Types. You should be able to see
a block that has to be checked that says SHOW ALL DEVICES. You then
hit ok and it will show you all options. What you do now is apply
the VGA or VGS, i cant remember-you want it to be set to 16 colors at
this time. Hit ok or apply and back out of it and reboot your computer.
Now this time your computer is set correctly for 16 colors. Go back
into START, SETTINGS, CONTROL PANEL and when in the control panel hit
DISPLAY (the monitor icon). HIt Settings, then in this new screen hit
CHANGE DISPLAY TYPES. A screen will come up with the selections and
dont make any selections. Click HAVE DISK ( I assume you have one from
the video card people. mine is Diamond and is a cd it is in the
win95 directory on this Diamond CD (not the MS Windows95 cd that your
boot up the computer with). After hitting Have Disk, it will load up
the drivers. Just hit apply or OK and back out of this and restart
computer and you have your 256 colors back. I know, I was also sick
trying it without first going into the 16 colors, was real simple, but
if you dont know, well.... I hope I explained it alright, if not or
you are confused let me know and I will get out the email that tech.
support sent me and type it out. Hope this helps. Let me know if
it works.
