I have a win 95 installation with IE removed by iradicate, and the firefox
browser installed. I have used setbrows.exe and firefox to try to set
firefox to the default browser. It has not worked. Appears some application
will automatically launch firefox when I double click a URL, but not
others, such as Xnews.
Is there a list of registry entries and/or dills and or whatever on the
internet that must be set or there to completely define a default browser
for windows? I would very much like to establish these settings manually
and do away with the mystery.
Thanks for any help.

I asked a similar question over on alt.fan.mozilla.
Here is the resulting thread:

This worked for me:
|| I don't use Win95 and haven't for a long time, but I take it the
|| Firefox setting for checking the default browser in "Tools >
|| Options > General" doesn't work in Win95?
