Both my CD drives appear to have disappeared from My Computer and I am
unable to access them. Is there a way of getting them back without
reinstalling windows.

Hope you have the windows files on your harddrive for the following.
possible solution 2:
reinstall or update the drivers for the ide (harddrive) controller
possible solution 3:
reboot in safe mode, right-click my computer, select properties, click on
device manager, remove the ide controller, restart computer, reinstall
drivers on when windows request them
there are more possiblities...

Problem solved I reinstalled the IDE interface and the drives now appear.
