Hi,
Why does Windows 98SE take so long to boot? I installed it on my PIII
1GHz and it takes 1minute 15secs, while Windows 95 on the same machine
takes just 24secs!
Is there any way I can speed up the boot on Windows 98SE?

Thanks,
Jamie.

Do you have a LAN card with W98SE and W98SE was not connected to the
LAN when you boot the system up? Is the time reported here is the time
you measured before and after the upgrade, or just on 2 identical
machines?...Antonio

I am not 100% but it seems when I take out the NIC of my computer my
WIN98SE boot time increases. Not that it is slow now. Maybe
something is sharing the same resources??? Have you tried to go out
to windowsupdate.microsoft.com and do the updates? ie. the critical
updates?

I have an Abit K7TA Mobo, 1.2 Tbird, 256Mb, IBM Deskstar 40Gb 7200RPM
drive.

If you want an OS that boots up in lighting time get 2000prof! Some
of said that it takes for ever in a day to boot. I am telling you it
boots up damn fast!

my machine has the 900 mhz athlon and on a asus a7-ve motherboard with
256 mb of ram and sagate barracuda 30 gb( 7500 rpm) hdd.i also
experience almost the same problem, but in my case the shut down time
is very long.i have win 2000 prof and it boots up & shuts down in
record time.it boots up in around one minute and shuts down within
12-15 seconds maximum.but in case of win98se the boots up quickly(6-8
seconds)but takes almost 15-20 minutes to shut down (and this thing
happens only when i keep the machine running for more than one hour
and do some heavy duity work on it eg software installing and
playning sim games.
so i always recommend all my friends and relatives to use 2ooo prof if
system is not restraining you

yep i had the same problem till i dnld via windows update the device mapping
patch & then it was ok .

But then i had another similar problem where another piece of hardware was
stopping w98se shutting down this was in fact a logitech wingman pad which
was connected via the (1of) usb port & caused w98 to hang & mot shutdown , i
resolved this by disconnecting & now all is ok (i will also be updating the
wman drivers to remove the usb power demand & hang up probs )!!
