I use my Windows 3.1 system all the time, and have for years. I have a
40 meg of memory on a Toshiba 2000CDS, with a Megahertz Modem Card.
Occasionally, I run out of memory, and so I wonder if I can remove any
of the CARDWIZ programs, or whether the FILES and BUFFERS are set
optimally, and generally whether my config.sys and autoexec.bat are set
optimally.

If anyone who understands what all these parameters mean has any
suggestions for me about things to add, change or delete, I'd be most
grateful. Thanks.

Charles S.

Here are my AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS files:

Exactly WHEN do you run out of memory? Such a message usually means
a) you've run out of resources (easy to spot) or
b) you've run out of low memory.

The latter can be remedied by using syshook.drv, for example from here:
http://home.t-online.de/home/jgrossklass/syshook.zip
(I added brief getting-started instructions to that one a few years
ago.)

You don't need the CD-ROM normally?

mouse.exe can be loaded high, assuming some remaining space in the UMBs.

You may want to get the VShare update for WfW 3.11, that'll get you rid
of share.exe for Windows at least.

You may want to include B000-B7FF, the monochrome BIOS area,

Use as many Buffers as the HMA permits. (mem /a might be useful to find
out.)

> FILES=40

You may want to change that to a bit more.

Be sure not to lose the SystemSoft PCMCIA software disks (a backup sound
like a good idea), this software is no longer available.

[snip]

The symptoms you describe almost certainly have little or nothing to do with
your CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT files -- and nearly as certainly everything
to do with the applications you're using and how you have Windows itself set
up. Without a LOT more info to go on, it's impossible to be more specific.

This particular one (Logitech) doesn't need an LH statement, as
it loads itself high automatically. But there's one more option:
MouseWare includes special Cloaking.exe driver, which helps to
free up almost all the low memory from the driver.

If there's SmartDrive active, what's the point?

Booting (before Smartdrv gets loaded)) could be a millisecond faster.
And since there's no other way to use the remaining space in the HMA,
this is better than wasting it.
